Love this book!,

Both myself and my husband have enjoyed this book and "Honey for a Child's Heart". We have not yet read "Honey for a Teen's Heart", but it is on the shelf waiting for us when we are ready, and our daughter is closer to her teen years. The descriptions of the books she recommends are great for deciding if the book is something you might be interested in, yet she and her friends, do not ruin the stories for you. This is a great book, highly recommended for Christian families, but anyone can benefit from the awesome books on her lists. Her encourangement to make reading a wonderful manner in which to connect with those you love, is of great importance more now than ever. Please write, "Honey for a Man's Heart"!! Thankfully, many of the women's book recommendations are suitable for a man as well.

If you are like me and love to read, but have found that at times you pick up a book and then get taken by surprise because you realize the book has content that you realize it isn't wise to set before your eyes and mind, then this is a wonderful book for you to get.Gladys Hunt first talks about reading itself--why women do read and why it's important for us to read! It was refreshing, convicting, and encouraging to me. My husband is always encouraging me to read more--rather than watch television =) Then she talks about the different genres of fiction and the authors that are worth reading. Scattered throughout the book, she has lists of books submitted by acquaintances and friends of hers. I think that a lot of Christian women stick to Christian inspirational fiction because it is lighthearted and they feel they can trust what the book is going to be about and that it's going to have a happy ending. But, Gladys Hunt has suggestions for all sorts of books that are worth reading--and I would say even important to read because they help us see outside of ourselves and understand the world better. I highly recommend this book! The other two books in the series: Honey for a Teen's Heart, and Honey for a Child's Heart are also very worthy of reading. She is not extreme in her views and takes a very balanced protective, but not sheltering view of what children and teens should and should not read.

Honey for a Woman's Heart is a great resource for any woman who likes to read and does not want to waste her time. Gladys Hunt gives a wide variety of suggestions for quality literature and offers a wide range of types and topics. I got many new ideas for books I had never before considered reading.

I was hoping this book would be along the same lines as the one for kidsbut it isn't. I was wanting booklists so I could catch books I might otherwise miss. Just wasn't helpful and I feel I wasted my money.

A "must have" book for book lovers,
By Brenda N. "Book Blogger" (Midwest USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Honey for a Woman's Heart: Growing Your World through Reading Great Books (Paperback)
I keep this book in a small stack of favorite books beside my bed. It is the kind of book one can read through at one time or come back for a chapter here and there. The real value in this book is it comes from a "Christian" perspective but brings so many wonderful authors and books one would never find if they stuck to the Christian shelves at the bookstore. While I found everything Mrs. Hunt recommended to be excellent, I was rather surprised by the recommendations by some of the guest readers. Just use a little more discernment when reading those titles if you prefer books with no language or, ummm... uncomfortable situations for Christian ladies. Otherwise, this is the best "books about books" I've ever read.

Like having a best friend,
This review is from: Honey for a Woman's Heart: Growing Your World through Reading Great Books (Kindle Edition)
I loved her first book for children and used it for years. I was a thirsty reader who had small amounts of time for reading ; I wanted my time to be fulfilling. This book was like having a best friend who recommended wholesome books. I plan to purchase the teen book after reading the free kindle sample.

This Didn't Work,

As an avid reader, I appreciate the desire to share one's love of literature with others. I, too, am happy to suggest books to those who need something to read and often note when something I've read applies to the subject at hand in conversation. It appears that Ms. Hunt attempted to do those same things in book format; unfortunately, it did not work well at all.Much the way a joke loses it's humor when it must be explained, reading loses much of their appeal when one must be coaxed into doing it. Hunt's chapters on the value of reading and why one should enjoy thus seem pointless. If her readers already understand her points there, then she is simply wasting time preaching to the choir. Her later commentary is like listening being in a one-sided conversation that meanders between remembrances of favored books and is punctuated by short lists of suggested reading by topic as they occur to her. If you really cannot find anything to read, then pick this up and flip through the pages; with the scores of books mentioned you're sure to find something to catch your eye. Otherwise, I recommend skipping this one since you'll merely end it feeling unsatisfied and ignored. |
