Customers buy this item with Catalytic Probe Thermometer (3-142) for Consolidated Dutchwest (Federal Airtight, Rocky Mountain, Andirondack) Woodstoves. (1" Probe) Innovative design for accurate measurement of gas temperatures immediately behind a combustor. Registers accurate readings up to 2000° Fahrenheit. Can be retrofitted to most catalytic stoves to comply with EPA monitoring regulations. An indispensable tool for efficient woodstove operation. Signals when to switch off bypass, and when to reduce fire to prevent degrading expensive combustors. Also, indicates declining performance of failing catalyst and the need for replacement. Probes are manufactured of copper for fast heat transmission, then plated for corrosion resistance. Probe end may be placed up to ˝-inch away from the combustor, but should not touch it. MADE IN USA. $19.00

Product Description

For Consolidated Dutchwest Wood Stoves (Models 224, 2460, 2461, 2462, Large 264, Extra Large 288, Andirondack, Federal / Airtight, Rocky Mountain, Seneca, 1990+ Sequoia, X-large. All these stoves use "canned" combustors, that is, they are banded first in expanding CatGard gasket and then in stainless steel. Canned combustors generally do not need additional gasket but this 6-inch round comes wrapped with extra gasket outside the can at no extra charge. This catalytic combustor is a ceramic honeycomb coated with platinum or palladium, elements engineered to maximize the catalytic reaction. Strategically placed in the smoke path inside a wood stove, the catalytic combustor literally causes smoke to burn as fuel, creating more heat from less wood. That means a wood stove can be burned slowly, transforming most energy stored in a log to the room as heat, instead of to the outside air as pollution. Condar recommends replacing your stove's catalytic probe thermometer each time the combustor is replaced. Condar catalytic probe thermometers are available from Amazon. If a catalytic probe thermometer is not compatible with your stove Condar recommends a stove top thermometer, also available from Amazon. Measures 6" diameter b 2" wide wrapped in a stainless steel "can."

4.0 out of 5 stars Condar Catalytic Combustor, January 1, 2011

This review is from: Ceramic Honeycomb (CC-001) Catalytic Combustor (6" Diameter By 2" Wide wrapped in a stainless steel "can") for Consolidated Dutchwest Wood Stoves (Models 224, 2460, 2461, 2462, Large 264, Extra Large 288, Andirondack, Federal / Airtight, Rocky Mountain, Seneca, 1990+ Sequoia, X-large). This combustor works fine except I can never get the advertised 5 year life expectancy out of it. I burn only untreated wood and am very careful not to get any metals in the firebox. I've never had the substrate crumble, but after 2 - 3 years the temperature starts to fall off and then I know its time to get a new one and they aren't cheap!

I can achieve a combustor temperature of 1200 deg. and some times a little higher as long as the fire is still able to produce smoke which is what the catalyst feeds on. My stove throws out a lot of heat when everything is working as it should and the wood is well seasoned. A properly working combustor will keep the creosote build up in the chimney to a minimum as long as the combustor temperature is 500 deg. or higher. An airtight stove is designed to work with an oxygen starved, smoldering, smoky fire for it to work properly so a properly functioning combustor is absolutely essential. This not only makes firewood last much longer (sometimes up to 8 hours between loads), but also will produce much more heat and cut down on emissions and creosote build up. If you are thinking about running your airtight stove without a combustor, DON'T DO IT!!! I can't stress this enough. If I can get 3 years out of a $120.00 combustor I think it's a cheap way to heat considering the wood fuel I'm using is essentially free.

I replace the catalytic combustor yearly as we burn 24-7 when winter approaches. It is a very durable product and we haven't had problems with the puffing you can get with cheaper made combustors. It heats up nicely to burn the smoke more efficiently. I really like this product!
