Musically Home Again,
By
This review is from: Honeydew (Audio CD)
Shawn has been one of my favorite musicians for a long time. Souls Core exposed him to many but Big Blue Sky, Eggshells and Jeff's Last Dance, I,II, and III built a solid foundation for that popular explosion. Shawn comes across as a rootsy, folksy, rocker on disc but his live shows are that much better. My wife and I have seen Shawn lots of times and he remains a grounded, down to earth talent that connects the dots through his songs.
His voice is unique and is perfectly suited for the type of music he delivers on Honeydew. Beneath the Velvet Sun had some high points but it almost seemed as if Shawn was in a slightly foreign land with all the effects money can buy. Here he is back home again. Sure there is a band behind him, but this is a close and intimate recording. Shawns voice and guitar stand out as they should. Jack Nicholson pays the money for Lakers tickets to see Kobe Bryant, not Luke Walton. Here, Shawn is once again the Kobe Bryant on the album. This is uncomplicated musicianship and it is freaking awesome. If there is ever a time that one would consider music "honest", this is it. The stories define what is Americana and are applicable all across our country. Ironically, just before this was released, after it was recorded, a converted mill in Cabbagetown, now a loft community was struck by a tornado. Yes Cabbagetown is real, the mills were real, and of course, they are almost all lofts now. There is one more great Cabbagetown converted mill story out there just waiting to be a Shawn Mullins song. A firefighter rescued a crane operator from the tip of the crane while hovering over a fire, in a harness from a helicopter, all on live TV several years ago. I can't wait to hear about it on the next album.

Shawn is back!,

This is Shawn Mullin's best album since Soul's Core. The album has a distinct old time feel to it, but it also has a vibrance to attract youth. Mullins is a highly underrated artist, and I would strongly recommend this album to fans of his previous work or someone who is looking for something different from mainstream music.

I feel in love with Mullin's music on his Soul's Core album, and haven't felt like any of his other albums have measured up to Core. After a long wait, Honeydew comes along and it definitely does measure up. Catchy tunes sung in his mellow voice. Guitar sounds picking in the background. This is one you can sing along with the whole album. If you like Mullins, this is the one you should buy.

Can't stop listening,
This review is from: Honeydew (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Shawn Mullins since Soul's Core and have seen him play and met him several times. That said, there are some of his CDs that I listen to rarely, and others not at all.
Honeydew demonstrates his continued development and evolution as a songwriter with pleasing results. While the previous album, 9th Ward Picking Parlor, took genre experimentation to slightly grating extremes (Cold Black Heart), Honeydew delivers evocative snapshots of the lives often overlooked - the homeless, the disenfranchised and the "every man" - weaving them into a seamless tapestry. Shawn writes for his voice, which has also developed nicely since his early material, evoking the way that life wears on each of us. Two years after it was released, I still listen to this CD regularly...when I listen to it, it feels going home (though perhaps to a big glass of wine or a whiskey). It's that comfortable, and speaks like a conversation. It's great to see an artist like Shawn keeping the stories and people alive, and maintaining American musical traditions.

I really like this album. I found it a logical next step in Shawn Mullin's growth as a musician. Nice mix of styles and found that the layers of musical accompaniment brought out his voice and lyrics. Normally I like Shawn's songs more simple so as to let us hear his beautiful and expressive voice.
