Music From The Heart
Butterfly Child's second album is a move away from the immaculate conception that was "Onomatopoeia". It's a return to earth, slightly messy, a little more reflective of human imperfection. Nonetheless, it's absolutely gorgeous. I must be well into my 100th listen, and I'm still pausing, closing my eyes, letting the shiver quicken across my skin. The...

The beauty of Joe Cassidy is that he's so unabashed in his singing, not holding back out of fear for what might be thought. It does take a bit of getting used to, you've got to let the songs work on you. But that's so often the case with the most beautiful of albums. What starts in struggle ends in a fuller embrace. There are too many good parts on this album. Unexpected movements, bridges, wordplay. A cliched turn of phrase that becomes meaningful. When he sings, "You've gotta love like it's out of fashion," you don't doubt that he means it. Amidst a tide of world weary cynicism, this album sparkles like a jewel, rough cut, in awe. Its currency, tenderness and feeling.

Unheralded Masterpiece, October 26, 2003
This review is from: Honeymoon Suite (Audio CD)
That this album isn't more well known is an absolute shame. On this record you will find some of the most perfectly executed pop hooks of all time. Very strummy and reminiscent of early Johnny Marr at times. Joe Cassady's voice is somehwat high pitched (think Chris Squire)and double-tracked John Lennon style. The song structures almost samba with joy and the drumming is completely perfect, martially performed and loaded with pocket. Lyrically it's all about coy romance and exotic travel. I've listened to this over and over for about 7 years and I'm still not bored. Buy it if you're into catchy hooks. Stay away from the dismal follow-up Soft Explosives, a completely different, over-orchestrated follow up. Get Onomatopoeia and all of their eps if you can find them.
