Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Some books make better movies. Take this debut novel by screenwriter Baker—it's already been picked up by New Line Cinema/Warner Brothers—which no doubt will translate better to the big screen. Todd Cartwright, the wisecracking and churlish narrator whose womanizing and hard drinking have made him a legend in his own mind, falls hard for Tami Everett, a classy woman different from Todd in nearly every way. And her widower father, Harry, knows it and begins thinking up ways to scare Todd off. But Todd stands his ground. Before the couple can marry, however, a drunk driver kills Tami. Both Todd and Harry journey to a Caribbean island to spread the ashes of the woman they loved in vastly different ways—leading to unexpected hijinks and new depths of grief. Baker excels at creating memorable scenes, including one in a hospital morgue where Todd pummels the drunk driver's corpse and an adult encounter between Todd and a married woman in an island resort's linen closet. But the author also relies on melodrama, cliché, and hyperbole, and Todd spends page after page wallowing in self-pity.

I fell off my chair laughing from the first page. Bart Baker has a way with words like no other author I have ever read. The things Todd Cartwright says and thinks will make you laugh out loud. I wasn't able to put this book down. I read it in three days. Started crying halfway through. It is such a moving story, in unexpected ways. I can't wait for the movie. No wonder every star in Hollywood including Bradley Cooper wants to play this part.

This is a book that will make you laugh and cry at the same time. It is deeply moving and the same time is written with a great sense of humor. I loved the writing style - very precise, with not a wasted word, and with a humor injected in every phrase. Characters are very memorable. It should translate very well on a screen, so I hope to see it as a movie soon.

This book is incredible. It is rare to find a book that makes you laugh or cry. This book manages to do both on the same page. I don't want to give any spoilers but midway through it takes a very unexpected turn. I don't know anyone who has read it that hasn't loved it and I've recommended it to a ton of folks already. You will not go wrong getting this book.

There's a reason this book for years has been called one of the best unmade scripts in Hollywood. Finally the rest of us can see why! Since it was optioned for around half a million by New Line, HONEYMOON WITH HARRY has been associated with such big names as Jack Nicholson, Vince Vaughn, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme, and Oscar-winning screenwriter Paul Haggis--who wrote the screenplay! I even hear Bradley Cooper might be looking at HARRY to be his directorial debut. How fun! So as we all wait for the movie--find a good beach chair and treat yourself to the book!

Hang on tight as an emotional rollercoaster is about to begin! A great 'summer' read that was hard to put down. The characters are real, with flaws and baggage just like the rest of us. How Baker gets to the heart of each one's true nature and sets them on the track for their future is no less a journey in itself. Sit back and enjoy!

I've know Bart for several years and I knew he was a good writer but he has blown my socks off with this book. I hated having to put the book down and go to work. I couldn't wait to get back so I could read some more. At points I laughed until I hurt and I nearly cried several times. The story line is SO good and it makes you think about your own life's challenges. It has some really great life lessons to be learned. I can't wait to read his next novel "Immediate Family"!

I read the opening sentence and didn't emerge from my room for hours. I didn't answer the phone or get up for a drink. I was unaware of the passage of time. No longer in my world -- I was firmly ensconced inside the world of these characters. Heartbreaking, funny and so honest, even the chapter titles were entertaining.

Where often I won't be able to stop myself from skipping ahead, I savored every word, every moment. When I cried, (and it isn't often a book can illicit a good cry), it came from an ache deep within. On the flip side I laughed often and hard. There were moments I cringed with embarrassment for what I was seeing, and some moments so private that I felt like an intruder, a voyeur.

In short, this story will take you through the gamut of emotion. If you don't see yourself somewhere in the pages, you will recognize people you know or familiar situations because these characters are fully realized, three dimensional and so loveable.

I dare you to read this book and NOT care.

Beautifully written, intelligent and human. It is without a doubt the best book I've read in years.

This book is so good. It's rare for a book to make me actually laugh out loud but this one does. I immediately fell in love with the characters and in those tough times my heart aches for Tami, and for Todd, as well. Once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down!
