You know, I don't normally put my review titles in all caps. But what can I say? This show is... well, BRILLIANT! I've always thought that there are far, far too many five star reviews here on amazon. But if there ever was a show that genuinely deserved a rave, this is it.

Archer is a wonderfully absurdist frolic for strictly adult audiences. Fundamentally this show is a giant spoof of 1960s spy thrillers; a spoof made for decidedly 21st century sensibilities. It's the show Get Smart would have been had all the characters been perpetually high on crystal meth.

In fact, the characters on Archer are all selfish, petty, and utterly and completely venal: the three great ingredients from which comedy is made. They seem to think and act more like deranged adolescents than grown-ups. Deranged adolescents with access to firearms. Add all this together and you get some idea of the flavor of the show. Archer is very much in the spirit of the original Williams Street adult swim cartoons, but is never merely derivative of them. Which of course is exactly what you'd expect, given that this show is produced by Adam Reed, whose previous producing and directing credits include both Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo. Indeed, Reed's voice credits go all the way back to the original Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

But while a similar sense of humor can be found throughout, Archer definitely has a flair all of its own. Visually it has kind of a pseudo-realist "ligne claire" (clear line) style that matches perfectly with the creatively anachronistic world the characters inhabit. Cell phones and other contemporary technologies may abound, but jet-age fashions still prevail, and the KGB and the Soviet Union remain major adversaries.

I love Archer, it's one of the funniest shows on TV. I was really excited about getting the DVD because of the "previously unaired pilot" and behind the scenes material. If those are your main reasons for purchasing the DVDs, skip it. The "pilot" is just an episode with Archer replaced with a dinosaur, which is funny for about thirty seconds but goes on for an entire episode. The behind the scenes stuff has some interesting concept art in it, but most of the actual information isn't even narrated - it's printed on the screen in letters too small to be read from across the room on my 48 inch HD TV. I'm still happy with my purchase of the discs because the actual show is so good, but PLEASE Archer people, do better than this on the next release!

Adam Reed has an impressive resume. With each series he has gotten better at his craft and drawn a bigger following. Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021, Frisky Dingo. Watch some of those in order and then the extraordinary (ultra-raunchy) humor and overall quality of "Archer" won't surprise you much. The animation and production values are better. The setting ("James Bond meets Arrested Development," says Reed) is better. The stories are better (and funnier, oh are they funnier).

But none of that matters. What matters is the way the characters are hilariously brought to life through the exceptional dialog and voice acting, much of which is ad-libbed. The timing, so important to...("to what?" "First of all...") to comedy, borders on miraculous.

Never mind, forget all that pedantic nonsense. This is simply the funniest damn show I have ever seen, and if you are 18 or older you must buy it now. Go!

It took me awhile to begin watching Archer, even though I had multiple friends tell me it was amazing. But, since last August, I've seen all the seasons and I'm watching the current season as it airs. Going back, and re-watching the first season is just setting the stage for who these characters really are, and they develop over the seasons into great personalities, each on their own.
I was apprehensive about this show, at first, due to the animation; I thought it looked tacky. But, once you look beyond that and listen to the show, the animation is apart of, and helps the show. I also always thought that you need to be quick to catch all the references that archer brings up. But, even if you don't catch them all the first time around, it's definitely worth the second viewing.

ARCHER is on of the best animated shows ever! Season 1 is just the kick-off of a fantastic, engaging, and funny series (for mature audiences only). "STERLING ARCHER-- only brat of the smug head of the International Secret Intelligence Service (ISIS), Malory Archer--, is a handsome, egotistical, pompous, overly-confident, self-glorifying jerk, and the world's most notoriously-skilled secret agent, who often reveals glimpses of a sweet, adorable, and caring side. All the main characters of the ISIS staff add crack-up comedy as they collectively try to figure ways out of dangerous and compromising situations that are almost always amplified by "Sterling's" antics, promiscuity, and/or careless under-estimations. This show is currently in its fifth season, with the continued push/pull romantic attraction between "Sterling" and "Agent Lana Kane," his female counterpart. This show is strictly for adults, so make sure the kiddies are not even in ear-shot when watching, otherwise you'll have much explaining to do.
