Biography

“When you write about relationships, you can’t do it halfway,” Blake confesses. “I think you really have to be fearless, and of course it's never easy."

The linear thinker versus the abstract thinker. The studio tinkerer versus the bedroom balladeer. Boy versus girl. You versus me. Us versus the world, set against a backdrop of pretty pictures and crazy oscillations. This, the third album by… Read more in Amazon's The Submarines Store

Editorial Reviews

Digipak. The Submarines are Hazard and John Dragonetti. They're a real-life couple whose 2006 debut, Declare a New State was written in the wake of a big break-up, then recorded after the make-up. Their 2008 album Honeysuckle Weeks, is born from their enduring union, something Blake addresses in the cutesy but cautious "You, Me and the Bourgeoise" . 10 tracks. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Honeysuckle Weeks, May 17, 2008
By
This review is from: Honeysuckle Weeks (MP3 Download)
This is the second 10-track album from the indie pop duo "The Submarines." I liked Declare a New State!, and was pleasantly surprised to see that they were releasing another album late this spring.

Everything this time around is very sunny, happy, solid pop music. Really good music for the start of summer. Blake takes over almost all the vocals, although Dragonetti is still present on at least half of the songs. This works well. I don't think this album is destined to be a 'classic' - but it is still an impressive sophomore effort. A few tracks are great; all are good.

My favorite tracks: 1, 3, 6, 10.

This album is absolutely worth the $8.99 you can get it for in Amazon MP3 downloads.

Also, at least for now, you can listen to all of The Submarines' music for free at last.fm (http://www.last.fm/music/The+Submarines) - so if you want a little more than the 30 second preview Amazon or iTunes gives you, head over there and check it out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Upbeat and pretty, September 18, 2008
By
This review is from: Honeysuckle Weeks (MP3 Download)
I got You Me and the Bourgeoisie as a free download, and had to check out more. It's happy and upbeat, filled with indie pop goodness.

1940 is my favorite. Swimming Pool is a cute love song that puts me in a good mood. Submarine Symphonika and The Thorny Thicket are really fun, too.

The female singer has a pretty voice. The music is good and the lyrics are interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed emotions, September 29, 2008

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Honeysuckle Weeks (Dig) (Audio CD)
I kind of bought this album on a whim... I saw a live performance, listened to some clips and thought, "what the heck!" When I popped it in the CD player I had mixed emotions, but after a couple of listens it started to grow on me a little more.

There are a handful of songs I love (hence the 4 stars rather than 3), some that are fun and good enough to listen to, and a couple that don't exactly tickle my fancy. Overall I like their sound... I definitely enjoy listening to the girl sing over the guy though.

My faves: 1, 3, 4, 6
