4.0 out of 5 stars Honeysuckle Weeks, May 17, 2008
By
This review is from: Honeysuckle Weeks (MP3 Download)
This is the second 10-track album from the indie pop duo "The Submarines." I liked Declare a New State!, and was pleasantly surprised to see that they were releasing another album late this spring.

Everything this time around is very sunny, happy, solid pop music. Really good music for the start of summer. Blake takes over almost all the vocals, although Dragonetti is still present on at least half of the songs. This works well. I don't think this album is destined to be a 'classic' - but it is still an impressive sophomore effort. A few tracks are great; all are good.

My favorite tracks: 1, 3, 6, 10.

This album is absolutely worth the $8.99 you can get it for in Amazon MP3 downloads.

Also, at least for now, you can listen to all of The Submarines' music for free at last.fm (http://www.last.fm/music/The+Submarines) - so if you want a little more than the 30 second preview Amazon or iTunes gives you, head over there and check it out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Upbeat and pretty, September 18, 2008

I got You Me and the Bourgeoisie as a free download, and had to check out more. It's happy and upbeat, filled with indie pop goodness.

1940 is my favorite. Swimming Pool is a cute love song that puts me in a good mood. Submarine Symphonika and The Thorny Thicket are really fun, too.

The female singer has a pretty voice. The music is good and the lyrics are interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed emotions, September 29, 2008

I kind of bought this album on a whim... I saw a live performance, listened to some clips and thought, "what the heck!" When I popped it in the CD player I had mixed emotions, but after a couple of listens it started to grow on me a little more.

There are a handful of songs I love (hence the 4 stars rather than 3), some that are fun and good enough to listen to, and a couple that don't exactly tickle my fancy. Overall I like their sound... I definitely enjoy listening to the girl sing over the guy though.

My faves: 1, 3, 4, 6

Listening to the entire cd reminds me of other duo indie bands like "The birds and the bees" and "The Weepies".My Favorite tracks are "The wake up song" and "Xavia". This cd is a "GEM" and worth to own.

I can't even remember where I stumbled across this Band but I quickly fell in love.

The melodies are pure and simple and Blake's voice is amazing.

Don't stop at buying this album. Also go see them in concert as they put on an amazing show.

I was lucky enough to see The Submarines open for Aimee Mann, live and up close, in London's O2. They played songs from this CD and it was one of the coolest musical events ever! Their music is mostly happy, light, and wistful. Totally recommended!

This is one of those bands that the main stream is missing out. Their sound is unique and the recording is first rate.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb album, February 18, 2009
This review is from: Honeysuckle Weeks (Dig) (Audio CD)
I first saw the Submarines perform in Boston at Berkley, where they were supporting Aimee Mann. They put on a truely marvellous performance, Blake has a beautiful voice, and a great personality which really comes out in her songs. This album is their second one, its fresh, vivacious and puts me in a good mood. I highly recommend it, along with their first album "Declare a New State" and also seeing them live (which I've subsequently done twice).

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, January 12, 2009

Like others, I got this CD mostly because of the iPhone commercial using their song. What surprised me is that that song quickly fell from my #1 favorite song on the album. There are so many tracks that are just really touching and heart-warming.

The songs on this CD are about love. And let me preface my statement that I'm a guy who much rather listen to songs that are up-tempo and not love songs. However, the lyrics are amazing and meaningful. They can seem cheesy at times (see: Swimming Pool --> "When you kiss me in ways I'd forgotten/You're love is like a swimming pool with no bottom"), but for some reason, it just fits right.
