Great air purifier for the price,
By
This review is from: Honeywell 16200 Desktop HEPA Air Purifier (Kitchen)
Pros:
-size, very compact -can be placed horizontally or vertically to save space -does a very good job of removing particles from the air -ionizer removes odors -price, try to find an air purifier/ionizer for under $40 Cons: -fully effective for rooms 110 square feet or smaller -noise level (at low it is slightly noticable, on medium you have to turn up the tv a few notches, on high it sounds like a fan or air conditioner on full blast) For the price, it does a terrific job in smaller rooms with the only drawback being the noise (which on low is very bearable). I leave it on high all day while I'm at work, switch to medium in the evening and low at night and it does the trick.

Honest Review of Honeywell 16200 Air Purifier,
By LivingFit365 (Pacific Northwest, USA) - See all my reviews

I've owned this air purifier for about 7 years now. Keep in mind any air purifier that has a high output fan and is highly efficient and is going to move a significant amount of air is going to have some fan noise. Don't buy this or any high output fan-based purifier thinking it is whisper quiet.
The only way to get around this is to have a whole-house central-air purifier where the mechanics, fans and motors are in the garage and the duct work is throughout the house. This would be the only way to eliminate noise completely and still have a high output air purifier. ---- Pros ---- The price is affordable. Check around for the best price. I've seen it at Home Depot for $39.99. At that price you can buy two of them for a medium to large room! The product is small, and compact enough to sit on a counter, bookshelf, table. The looks are appealing and sleek and it tends to blend in well with the surroundings. On high it sucks in air at a pretty good rate. It eliminates smoke and odors in the kitchen after cooking. It freshens the air. The air does seem to be a bit lighter. The HEPA filter catches allot of dust. I know it is working because when I replace the filter it is light to dark gray from dust that it collected. This is particulate matter that would still be in my home if I didn't have this purifier. Changing the HEPA filter is quick and easy. You just take off the front grill, take out the dirty filter and replace it with a clean one. I don't like the filters that claim you can vacuum them and reuse them. Nope. I like to make sure I put a clean filter back in. Also if you vacuum a filter and your vacuum doesn't have HEPA filtration you're just blowing that junk out of your vacuum and back into your house when you vacuum the filter. Unless of course you vacuum it outside. But that is a hassle and you'd never be sure the filter was totally clean. I'd rather throw out my dirty filter and put in a clean one. The replacement filters are only $14.00 and well worth it to know that all the particulate matter is thrown away. The white noise it makes while running on medium or high can be soothing and comforting when sleeping. For myself it depends upon the day. some nights I like white noise and other days I want it perfectly quiet. There are 3 speeds that allow me to do just that. Speaking of 3 speeds-- It has high, medium and low (sleeping). On low you can hardly hear it and is perfect for sleeping at night when you want it to be quiet but still have some air cleaning ability. Medium speed is hardly noticeable but emits a soft white noise. The ionizer function works well, but I can't really tell if it is making the air smell any fresher or not. I'm sure ionizer technology has it's benefits. ---- Cons ---- When the motor is on high there is a noticeable blowing fan sound. This noise might be enhanced because the air is blowing through slits in the top back. But keep in mind, like I said in the beginning any purifier with a fan that is going to be highly efficient is going to emit some noise. For me it is not that bad. Some people have a noise threshold that is more sensitive and therefore they can't tolerate noise. If you can stand the sound of a regular fan blowing than having this purifier on high won't bother you. You can always leave it on high when you're not home and maximize your air cleaning and then turn it to medium while your home and on low when you go to bed! That would be the best routine in my opinion. If you didn't want to waste that electricity while you're gone you could plug them into a timer and set the timer for 2 hours prior to you getting home. After about the 7th year it developed a slight clicking sound. I'm not sure if this is due to wear and tear or the fact that I have packed and moved it long distance a couple of times. I think if it was never bounced around in a moving truck it would not have gotten that clicking sound. It's not really that bad and in fact It doesn't really bother me. If this unit had a timer function that would make it perfect! The ability to set the time for it to come on at the high speed 2 hours before I get home from work. And to go off right after I leave for work. This would be a nice addition. There is some scientific theory that connects ionizers on air purifiers to creating ozone. As the scientific theory goes, this creation of ozone could potentially cause unstable form of oxygen or free radicals that attack DNA and cause cancer. Some scholars suggest that an air purifier would need to output a large amount of ozone via its ionizer in order for it to be even slightly dangerous. Other scholars believe even a tiny amount of unstable oxygen could be hazardous. The jury is still slightly out on this theory. I post it here just for your information and in case you want to investigate that further on your own and come to your own conclusion. With this air purifier you have two switches on top with which you can turn off the ionizer and just use the HEPA filtration only. For the price of this unit using it for HEPA filtration only is still a bargain. I gave this 4/12 stars. But since there isn't a .5 rating I gave it 4. I highly recommend this product even if you just use it for HEPA only. It does exactly what it is designed to do. ----------- If you enjoyed this review you might enjoy other reviews from me. Super Value!Super Product!,

I purchased two of these little units and I must say they are definately a bargain at this price. Most importantly though they really do the job.You can check the black liner a few days later and you will be amazed how much this little purifier sucks out of the air.I live in Ny and my home gets plenty dusty no matter how much I clean. This has helped my family breath easier.I am going to purchas a third on now,so I thought I would just share my experience while here.P.S. filters only need to be bought every six months thats a pro...cons only one...can be a little noisy if you are used to having complete silence in your home....to me the clean air is worth it!

Yes, this cleaner is pretty loud, especially at the high setting. We have three, one for each bedroom. On its lowest setting, it adds a low rumble, similar to a fan, for sleeping - good if you work night shift or live in a noisy area. We have three cats and a large dog and for the first time in 11 years, our son has been without an upper respiratory infection. It is affordable and efficient.

I thoroughly satisfied with this product. I have an awful spring allergy seasons and this past spring has been my most minor one so far thanks to this air purifier. I have a small bedroom and I kept this machine running 24/7. I also kept the windows closed all spring (it is so tempting to open them during the first few nice days of spring but I resisted). Keeping the windows shut and this machine running, my bedroom air was clean of pollen and I was able to breathe through my nose when going to sleep (if you have allergies you know how awful it is not to be able to breathe through your nose when trying to sleep).

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS UNIT, I cant help but wonder if the reviewers below aren't from the competitors -----
Like ALL air filters it makes noise, very little on low and more on high - there is no such thing as a quite air driven -- air filter...that works--- its works like all Honeywell air filters; this is my third -- VERY PLEASED WITH ALL MY HONEYWELL FILTERS - ITS DOESN'T NOT MOVE - OR VIBRATE --- ITS A GREAT BUY --- IT ALSO CAN MOVE ALOT OF AIR ON HIGH -

I originally bought this as a purifier for my office space to eliminate perfume odors from a co-worker (which it did help with). Office closed down, I brought the purifier home and put it in my bedroom. I then became intimately familiar with its high-pitched whining noise. It's like a needle of noise, a thousand mosquitoes incessantly shrilling right in my eardrums. I've tried oiling the motor, but that neither reduced nor eliminated the sound.
Efficiency-wise, this unit's filters get clogged quickly and it's not 100% effective at eliminating dust, even though I have a small bedroom. In all fairness, I probably just need to pay more attention to the state of the pre-filter and main filter and clean/replace them more often. Overall recommendation: get this only if you (or the intended user) have no high-end hearing. If you can't hear high-pitched noises (metal-on-metal squeaking, mosquitoes, some small birds) this will probably work just fine for you. If you've got sensitive ears, don't buy this filter.

My previous review was that this was VERY loud.
This morning, I decided to ship it back. I took the front off to see how will it was grabbing cat hairs, and it was doing fine, snapped the front back into place, turned it back to high, and.... it was quiet. Evidently, something was loose or lined up wrong and was causing all the noise. Now it's fixed. So, if you have one that's abnormally loud, check to make sure all the parts are in place and see if it doesn't fix the problem.

I had this air filter for about a year, and it worked out okay. I had two problems with it. 1) It's extremely noisy. It shakes and rattles even on the lowest setting. 2) The replacement light NEVER came on. I had a hard time determining when to change it's filter. Overall it worked, but you would probably be better off finding a quieter model.

This unit does clean the air and is quite efficient at removing odors, but it is so noisy that it is a relief to unplug it and put it back in its box to return it.
