Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
We moved into an older home that has no air conditioning, high ceilings, no insulation, and louvered windows. This is in the eastern edges of LA county, in a valley, where it gets pretty hot during the summer and occasionally other times of the year (it was 103 yesterday, for instance, a record high).

When we moved here I got a Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner with Heater (ARC-14SH) for my office, which is at one end of this ranch style home.

I'm a big fan of the Whynter. It worked fine in the heat, never quite cooling the whole room, but certainly giving a blast of cold air where I needed it. The room was at fault, so I don't blame the unit. In fact, later in the summer we moved it in the bedroom to supplement a far too small window unit. The room got downright chilly. It started cooling down and I moved the unit into our babies room, with the heater function keeping the room at a steady temperature throughout the relatively cool winter months. Now that its getting hot again, I was torn about moving the unit out of her room. She needs it cool in hot weather for the sake of all our sanity.

So, I was looking for an addition. The goofiness of our windows and lack of ability to do home repair projects tends to cancel out window units. This one looked like a good choice so I went for it.

Which do I recommend, this Honeywell or the Whynter? Well, both have 14000 BTU cooling, with equivalent cooling power, I look at other issues. And there's no clear stand out. The Honeywell is a bit smaller, and I the vent is more variable. Though, you can't quite enjoy the full force of it hitting you.

I know that this unit is rated for 700 sq ft, I have a 960 sq ft apartment but took the time to seal off both the bedroom/closet + bathroom, bringing the total sq ft down to ~700. It does an admirable job of cooling ~450 sq ft but the limited exhaust hose and no provided intake hose severely limit this units ability to cool its stated rating.

Oddly enough the intake side of the unit has an identical port to the exhaust, meaning all you need is an additional hose to suction from any area of your home space. I am completely confused as to why they didn't make this a two hose unit when it clearly has the ability to be one. I'm going to go down to my local HVAC/hardware store and find some similar piping/coupling to the ones provided so that I can pull intake air from all around the apartment, which seems to be the primary reason this unit cannot cool the entire space. It recycles virtually the same air it puts out, I can be at a comfy 71 degrees as long as I stand in the corner by the window where the unit is located, but walk 30 ft away into the kitchen and it's up to 79-80. Granted the unit has managed to bring down my internal apt temperature 6 degrees, which is a HUGE relief. I wasn't expecting a miracle out of this unit, just something livable, which it has accomplished and earns it 4 stars. Additionally the remote and no drain pan make this unit extremely easy to use. I've only gotten the raindrop symbol (internal drain pan full) once after running it for 72hrs straight. There are 2 very easy to use ports on the back for pulling off extra water the machine can't evaporate on its own, I plopped the unit on some cardboard and used a tupperware to catch the water, took all of 3 min.

I read a lot of reviews before i purchased the Honeywell MM14CCS . It works well and blows cold air and its not that loud no more than a window unit. The top vent points upward but nothing a piece of cardboard folded as a hood makes the air blow straight forward. It gets cool in my front room and Kitchen. I live in Southern California it gets hot here and right now its 85 outside and 76 inside my house and the temp keeps dropping. Last week we had a heat wave in the 90's 100's so I'll be ready for the summer. My wall unit finally stopped working so i bought this portable so i can move it around in my house especially the bedroom when summer temps are high at night.

What a mistake of a purchase. First off, I don't know what Amazon thinks they're doing shipping these monsters through UPS/FedEx and not exploring a freight option. The box was downright MANGLED. It looked as if it was air-dropped into my driveway. The protective Styrofoam was obliterated and there are some deep gouges on the side of the unit. Whatever, I was hot and plugged it in in the living room on my lunch break. I have a Nest thermostat for my heating system and was able to monitor the temperature of the area from work. The temperature went UP! It STRUGGLED to bring the room (about 200 sq ft) down by two degrees. It also exhausts enough air out through the window that it drew air down my chimney and I got a sooty smell in the living room. So I went to Home Depot and dropped another $30 in the HVAC aisle rigging up an intake hose. The performance was MUCH IMPROVED but still nowhere's near what a 14,000 BTU unit should be providing. Plus having two bulky hoses going out the window makes it a lot less "portable." I need to talk to Amazon about returning this for a refund, but I'm not sure how that's going to go giving the state of the packaging. It's just a painful dent in the bank account for what you get in return.
