I already own a small Sentry safe that is rated for 1/2 hour fire time but I needed something bigger and wanted something rated for at least an hour. This was the cheapest safe that I could find that was nice quality and still rated for an hour fire time. The safe arrived promptly and was VERY heavy. This is about a 60lb safe (empty) which makes it awkward for someone to try and steal even with the carrying handle. This was quite roomy inside and will fit legal sized documents in case you need to keep copies of things for your records. The keys both worked and the latches seemed fine, however like others I did notice that the instruction booklet was slightly damp after opening the safe. I let it air out a little bit before putting anything inside and wrapped everything up in ziplock bags in order to protect from water damage that may occur. I have not actually tested the fire time or the break-in time but this seems like it would go through at least an hour in a fire and would be more difficult to break into than a lot of the safes currently on the market. A couple of notes: the safe MUST be stored horizontally in order to have maximum protection in a fire, and if the safe does go through a fire, Honeywell will replace the safe with a new one. All in all this seems like a great safe for protecting your records and/or personal items from fire for an affordable price.

Have a couple Sentry 1100s. Purchased this one for legal sized documents. Pretty heavy unit. Not sure if the horizontal storage requirement is for fire protection or water protection. When I opened the unit the owner's manual was damp. The manual states that since the unit is airtight that it should be opened occasionally (??) and aired out for 30 minutes. I purchased some reusable desiccant to put in the unit.

This safe is the perfect size and the only one in it's category (that I've found) that can fit legal documents. Also, this is the only safe I've found in this size that has a 1 hour fire rating at 1550 degrees F. True it must be in the flat position to work properly, but if this isn't an issue for you then this is the perfect safe. Keep in mind this isn't for storing grandmothers' pearls as it's not a security safe. This is for keeping your pictures, documents, passports, and electronic backups safe from water/fire.

I bought this box with several criteria in mind. I knew that most fireproof boxes were fairly expensive so price was a big factor. However, most of the other small boxes in this price range only had a half hour fire rating or they had other problems. My parents (whom I gave this box to ) live in the country, where the fire department may take a long time to respond, so at least a one hour fire rating I feel is needed. This box fits the bill perfectly
It’s fairly large, like a very large briefcase, and heavy, though with the handle, it’s possible to move with some effort. The build quality is reasonable, with a black metal casing and inner shell, and metal spring loaded clips to keep it closed. There is a lip and seal that runs around the inside of the lid that presumably keeps it watertight. The two clips that keep the unit closed when unlocked are fairly sturdy and there is no reason to think that they would fail under fire conditions. The walls are thick, and though I have no idea what they are made of, the weight makes it seem like it has to be something that could resist fire for a considerable amount of time. This is definitely a confidence-inspiring box.
There is a decent amount of room for papers inside the box. You can lay 8X10 sheets flat without folding, even large envelopes should fit. However the space would most certainly fill up quickly if you start putting hard drives, cd’s and other electronic equipment inside. A fair number of papers like birth certificates, SSN cards, passports, that’s about it. How much more could you need for the price?
Just so everybody knows, this is not a safe. It is not designed to protect against theft. Any good safe can be bolted to the house or building. This unit cannot.

Great, heavy safe. This will be perfect now and when the kids go to college. They can lock up all their i-devices. Even a large laptop. Unfortunately, the key got stuck when he tried to close it. FORTUNATELY, it was in the open position so we were able to get the items out. The safe has a seven year warranty so the CSR had me send a copy of my AMAZON receipt, (nice that AMAZON keeps them) and said he would mail a new one out. The key issue does have me concerned though.

Two years later. It is working fine.

I searched many different ways online, but finding a water/fire chest rated more than a half hour was difficult - half hour Sentry's kept popping up. I finally found this item in a store locally, once I had the model number, the search on the internet worked: It was less expensive and had free shipping from Amazon, so that's the way I went.

Why worry about your stuff with a 1/2 hour fire chest - get this Honeywell fire chest, it comes with a 1 hour fire rated protection.

Some reviewers said this is heavy, but for me, this makes it even better. It does need to lay flat, I wish it could be up on end, but it's really not a problem for me - it's not that much more as far as square footage, just makes it harder when moving it - but easier to open, if you don't have to move it.

I do wish the clasps had a sturdier feel to them, but no problem so far.

It comes with a moister bag - absorbs moister. Remember to air it out for at least 30 minutes a month, to keep away mildew, etc...

I'm really happy I went with this 1 hour Honeywell, instead of the cheaper 1/2 hour Sentry.

It probably would get a 5 star review, but item is too new - I hate reviews that claim how great a product is after just a couple days of ownership.
