I purchased this Honeywell Digital Thermostat to replace an original 28 year old mechanical thermostat that operated the electric heat pump system in my home. Prior to purchasing the new digital thermostat I removed the original one to examine the wiring configuration, knowing that this would provide information required in selecting a new digital thermostat. Next, I visited the Honeywell website, selected the choices of thermostats for electric heat pumps with aux. back-up heat, and found this one. (There are models that offer all sorts of daily/weekly programming, but that feature was not one that I desired.) The website was extremely useful because it allowed me to examine the "Installation Manual", which included a chart to coordinate the original wires with the correct connection posts in the new unit. The removal of the original and installation of the new took less than 30 minutes with no difficulties. It has been in use for about a month now, and I am 100% satisfied! My old thermostat was 5 degrees off. Honeywell states that this model is to be accurate to within 1 degree. So far it has been dead-on accurate! For the price, it is a wise investment. I highly recommend it!

First, the overview; Heat pumps in conjunction with an air conditioner really should be called heat/cool pumps because they work by taking advantage of the temperature differential between the indoor and outdoor temperatures for both heating and cooling. The further north you go in the US, the less you will encounter heat pump technologies because in the winter, the greater the temperature differences between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the less efficiently a heat pump works. And basically, once you get much below freezing for an extended period of time, heat pumps become incapable of rapid increases in heat output, so they often have an third function setting labeled emergency heat; which uses an energy intensive set of heating coils to deliver a burst of heat when needed to rapidly increase your indoor temperature. Now here's the thing, when the emergency heat function kicks in, you can see those little gauges on your electric meter start to spin like airplane propellers. Its just about the most expensive heating solution available. So you obviously don't want to ever use the emergency heat function, if you can help it.

Now. You know those fancy programmable digital thermostats that allow you to set multiple temps for multiple times over multiple days? Be forewarned, if you use one with a heat pump, anytime they encounter a difference between the actual temperature and the temperature you have set, if it exceeds two degrees, they will engage the emergency heat. Ouch!

So. Even though it may not common knowledge, the way to efficiently use a heat pump system is to set the temperature and basically forget it. Oh I don't mean you should never make small adjustments, but the key word is small.

I bought this to replace an old thermostat that had been in my house for more than 10 years and kicked the bucket. Finding a thermostat that works with heat pumps is tough, especially one with an auxiliary heater. Practically every one on Amazon had a caveat that said it wasn't designed for use with a backup/aux heater. It works as advertised, but something that is rather annoying is that you can't change the temperature differential like my old one surprisingly allowed you to change. I'm talking about the plus or minus number of degrees that it allows before cycling on the A/C or heat. I only have one thermostat and heat pump for a two-story townhouse so the temp fluctuates quite a bit. This thermostat seems to cycle on if the indoor temperature rises a half degree above the set temperature, meaning it's on and off a LOT more than the old one. It does keep the house at a more comfortable, even temperature, but since it's so loud it disrupts my activities more often.

I could not find a thermostat that was for heat pumps only. I looked online and found on Amazon.com this therostat I just love it. It is so simple to install and simple directions to follow. Great product, great price.

i've been wanting to replace my old mercury thermostat for several years but just never got around to it. lately my AC has been running even after reaching the correct temp. according to the thermometer, so i decided to finally get a new one. i almost slipped up and bought the one similar to this one but not made for heat pumps. make sure you get the correct one for your unit.
like another reviewer, i went online to honeywell and printed out the manual but as it turned out, it does come with the product.
after looking at all the unmarked wires connected to our old thermostat, i called our local HVAC guy to hook it up for us. i wanted him to check our freon anyway so i only had to pay for the one service call.
one surprising and good thing...we have a neutral wire so no need to run this new one off of batteries. i wouldn't have known that and i wasn't thrilled about having to change batteries anyway.
everything is working fine today (just installed a few hours ago). i will update this review depending on what happens, if it looks like we are saving money or if the product turns out to be a dud or if everything stays basically the same.
