Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I've used quite a lot of thermostats, from the normal AA battery four wire, to the mercury switch type of old, to a pneumatic thermostat that gets stuck all the time.

This thermostat is not only the most advanced and feature rich thermostat I've ever used, it's not even really comparable to the others. There are some hangups I had about this device I'll share, but there's also quite a bit of new functionality that should add a lot of convenience.

Product Quality:

Fit and finish are approximately the same as the White Rodgers thermostats I've used, which ranged in price from fifty to one hundred dollars. That's a good thing. It's a bit nicer than a Lux model. I installed a $45 Honeywell in my in-law's house a few years ago and it had a similar quality and has lasted. In short, the quality appears to be good enough to last for many years, but it also doesn't have the upscale finish that some other thermostats in this price range show.

Installation:
This is important: it is not the same as other thermostats. You do not simply remove the wires from your old thermostat and jam them into this one, which is how I've installed most thermostats in the past (a job that takes about three minutes). You need a common wire (this is called the "C WIRE" in the product description), and if my experience is informative, there's a good chance you do too. Most modern thermostats have integrated circuits that require some power, but have satisfied that with a AA battery setup. Not in this case (understandably, given the Wifi radio and color screen as well as constant need to process audio).

We had the thermostat professionally installed and it worked great for 1 week. After a week it stopped responding to voice command and in the middle of the night would prompt for a voice command.

After 3 weeks, our HVAC stopped completely. Since the thermostat had been working for 3 weeks, I figured it had to be the HVAC. Well a $200.00 diagnostic later I learned that the thermostat has stopped working. Reinstalling the original "non-smart" Honeywell thermostat resolved the issue.

I may have gotten a lemon, but I'm afraid of the cost to find out if it was just a bad unit or a bad design.

While it did work, I will note that I was disappointed that the device did not have any option to perform a software update. You would think that a device at this price point which has wi-fi and is "smart" would include an option to perform an software update.

I'm a software writer and while I would love to say we get stuff perfect out of the gate, we all know that isn't true. So before investing the money, I would check to make sure that your wi-fi connected thermostat supports software updates.

I could not be more disappointed with this product or it's support.

Here is what I liked about the thermostat -
1) It looks good on the wall (the first one I got did at least)
2) The voice commands worked great for me even when yelling at it from the 2nd floor master.
3) Scheduling is easy online and personally I had no issues with the app on android.
4) The circulate feature. This is all I really wanted over a normal scehduled thermostat; it keeps things balanced in a 2 story 1 thermostat house.

Here is why I absolutely hate it and Honeywell now (grab a snickers, I have a lot to vent) -
First off I got this item from another place on the internet before Amazon. I'm a DIY guy so this is all done by my own hands (super easy if you're the slightest bit handy). Install goes easy as expected and I'm up and running in less than 30 minutes between the wires, the wifi, and downloading the app. Everything is great for a few days and I'm really pleased with my purchase. Day 4 or 5 I notice that smell you get turning the heat on for the first time of the year. I knew something was wrong because the heat had already run plenty this year and I have a heat pump system which usually doesn't make this smell. I looked at the thermostat and sure enough it had decided to fire my Emergency/Auxillary resistive heating cools which were probably caked in dust to burn off seeing as they haven't been needed or used in years. I investigated and found that for some reason the thermostat was no longer turning the compressor on so the system wasn't generating any heat. I played around with the settings for a while but just couldn't get it working. Before calling Honeywell support I manually tested the wires myself and found the compressor to turn on just fine.

After doing quite a bit of research, I'm telling Honeywell why I WON'T buy this thermostat, and I'll say I really wanted to at least try it because of the voice commands, but even though that's the feature that makes this thermostat, ironically it's also what makes it weak. Anyway, here goes, and I hope Honeywell will read this (yeah, I know... fat chance):
1. Honeywell concentrated primarily on temperature settings. Yes, I know that's the big part of what a thermostat does but that's not all.
2. As other reviewers have noted, there is no way to turn the heating or cooling on or off. In the spring or fall, when in many areas people often times turn both heat and A/C on and off, this would seem like a basic set of commands.
3. No way to turn just the fan on or off... really ??? Many people like to just ventilate their homes. Again, another missing basic command. And Honeywell did add a feature to circulate the fan, which many reviewers love, but then again, NO voice command.
4. A youtube video shows a user giving commands and the t-stat responds, but then it takes a long time for it to return to the main screen after the thing tells you what it's done. I'd say about a 2-3 second delay should be the max, but the video shows about 6-7 seconds.
5. Honeywell released an update in April (according to their website), and they added some useful scheduling commands, but they also added commands for the t-stat to tell you the time and the date... WHY ? These are nice but completely useless. I can tell the time by looking at my watch, and most watches have the date. Why not add the commands to turn the system on or off, or circulate the fan ? It boggles the mind.
The unit itself is obviously very aesthetically pleasing (just look at the screen).
