5.0 out of 5 stars A South Carolina native w/ a better voice than Darius Rucker
For the past few years, I have been buying albums based more on listening to the album prior to purchase than impulse buying off decent radio airplay. I had never heard of this guy before & was recommended to hear the CD. After one minute of each of the first two songs, I bought it. This man is unbelievable. 2.0 out of 5 stars Snoring in Seattle
To put this in Conan's lexicon, if Hootie and the Blowflies had a baby with a burned out Neil Diamond, this is what their kid would sound like. This should be music I like. It goes for a rootsey, singer-songwriter feel that should be a natural hook for someone whose tastes can be rootsey enough to include a varied palate of such people as Bob Marley, older John Martyn,...

For the past few years, I have been buying albums based more on listening to the album prior to purchase than impulse buying off decent radio airplay. I had never heard of this guy before & was recommended to hear the CD. After one minute of each of the first two songs, I bought it. This man is unbelievable. Power, depth, emotion - all mixed into the perfect blend of music. Solitude is one of the greatest songs I've heard in the past few years. 3 AM is pure emotion. The rest of the album is great. His band is very good. Craig Shields adds saxophones & such in a peculiar blend. TJ Hall on drums brings just just enough power & subtlety to the music. Scott Bannevich's bass gives the songs their tone & lets Edwin do the rest. And get this - he's even better in concert & his new album kicks butt! One of the best albums in a while - if only he could get some serious airplay.

5.0 out of 5 stars The original, the best, and nearly the lost art, November 23, 2004

This is the album that introduced Edwin McCain to the world, and it is a wonderful amalgam of rock, blues, and jazz, featuring acoustic and electric guitars perfectly blended with saxophones and woodwinds, layered with Edwin's beautfully powerful voice. There is no other album out there with this particular sound.

If you have ever loved an Edwin McCain song, then you simply must get this album. Unfortunately, the woodwinds abruptly disappeared on his next few albums, only to reappear in the latest "Scream and Whisper". You'll appreciate them here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooked from the first song, March 1, 2000
This review is from: Honor Among Thieves (Audio CD)
My wife and I saw Edwin McCain open for Hootie & the Blowfish at a 1995 concert in Iowa. This was just a few days before Honor Among Thieves was released, and I hadn't heard of him before that night. His act was incredible--I haven't seen someone perform with such passion too often before or since. He certainly overshadowed the headlining act!

This first CD definitely lived up to my high expectations--I picked it up the first day it was available and it's been in my personal CD rotation ever since. I'm especially partial to "Alive" and "Jesters, Dreamers and Thieves", but after those it's nearly impossible for me to rate the other songs. Absolutely incredible. I highly recommend this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars The artist that 'popular' radio forgot!, April 24, 2001

The first time I heard "Solitude" I said to myself that if one iota of those lyrics had any truth that this guy was the greatest songwriter to live in the last 10 years! When I met Edwin and the band some time in 1996 and found it was a true story I knew he was the greatest songwriter that 'popular' radio would never appreciate. "Solitude" got me to buy the CD, "Jesters,..." made me a huge fan. Because of EMB I've become familiar with two other artists, Jeffrey Gaines and Pete Riley (/Treehouse), who both opened for EMB the numerous times I've seen them. If you like what you hear on the CD but have never seen EMB live you have no clue what you're missing. If you like EMB and you're looking for more fantastic artists check out Jeffrey Gaines and Pete Riley.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great songwriting and great singing add up to a great album., February 7, 2007

Ediwn McCain's songwriting really shines on this album. The tracks "Sorry to a Friend" and "Solitude" are both destined to be classics among Ediwn McCain fans. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, he has only had a few radio hits; "I'll Be" being his most popular, and another great example of beautiful lyrics and songwriting, although on a different album.

The tracks range from bluesy folk to light rock. The lyrics are often sublime, and always intelligent. McCain's voice is like a glass of fine whiskey; edgy and smooth at the same time.

Excellent album for those looking for something accessible, yet mature and engaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Great, September 21, 2000

I first saw Edwin and his band back in 1996. I hadn't heard of him before then. When I picked up "Honor Among Thieves" after seeing them live, I new I had found my new favorite band. Every song on this CD is excellent. It is still a part of my regular rotation. Every member is very talented at their instument. I love this album mostly because of the emotion that pours from it. Every line of every song is filled with passion. If you love good, thoughtful music like I do, I promise you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD, November 29, 1999
This review is from: Honor Among Thieves (Audio CD)
Simply a great CD. Virtually all of the tracks are quite good. I've played this CD for about 4 friends thus far and each one thought it was great. If you like a Hootie and the Blowfish meet Dave Mathews kind of sound, you will really enjoy this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a dud on it., February 19, 2007

Yeti Hunter (Adelaide, Australia) - See all my reviews

Bit of a stretch giving it a five star rating I originally thought, but it really does deserve it. There are a couple of five-star songs on this album - America Street, and the quieter, sorrowful Sorry to a Friend, but every other one is a four starrer or very close. You won't be bothered getting up to skip any of these tracks while you're listening to Honour Among Thieves, and that makes a pretty good album as far as I'm concerned.

If you like James Taylor, Nickel Creek, The Waifs, or the quieter stuff by Garth Brooks or Lee Kernaghan, you'll be well served by adding this to your collection.
