Book Description

Alone! No other person within 250,000 miles. How do you survive on a world that is absolutely barren? How do you stay warm in the absolute cold of space? What drives the lingering stillness, the unrelenting quiet of absolute solitude from the depths of your mind?

Mankind's greatest achievement of the twentieth century is now lost in the mists of history. Over thirty years have passed since the first human set foot on another planetary body, the Moon. In the intervening quarter of a century, manned space exploration has been reduced to an altitude of two hundred statute miles. Yet still space beckons-- the Moon hangs in each night's sky like a taunting enemy, laughing at us, challenging us to ascend to her lofty heights. Finally, a man once again sets foot upon our celestial neighbor. This time he does not set a flag and speak a short phrase to grasp the imagination of all humanity. This time he is not an emissary of some government. This time he is an ordinary man who has come to set up shop.

Representing the private business, Selena Corp, Hawk Stanton is placed on the Moon by using a sequence of new, innovative technologies. These are not the technologies used by NASA, but are those used by a lone man in a hostile wilderness. These are the tools used by a man to survive.

Injured by a white-hot Subterrene probe, Hawk is repaired by a surgical team operating from the Earth. Battered by loneliness and depression, Hawk relies on his friend and colleague back on Earth, Rowdy, to retain his link to humanity. Opposed by the US government, he finds his stay extended from weeks to months.

But Hawk survives.

Battered by loneliness, depression, and injury, Hawk struggles under the continuous assault by the cold, the vacuum, and the desolation of the Moon. Then, near the end of his endurance, he faces the greatest test of his life and makes the greatest discovery for all mankind.

This is the story of one ordinary man, born to honor, who took upon himself the task of leading mankind, finally, into the great frontier.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...a fascinating exploration of plausible lunar settlement technology spiced with episodes of heart-pounding suspense in a pioneer's heroic effort to do more than just survive." -- G. David Nordley, Author

"Congratulations! I thought [Honor Bound Honor Born] made a fine job of turning the science and politics into human drama ... it was an ingenious page-turner all the way through." -- Stephen Baxter, Author.

"I finished HBHB in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. Very good pacing, good action and believable situations. Your characters are sympathetic and interesting. ...I've recommended your book to a number of my associates." -- William Maness, President, Impulse Aerospace, Inc.

"Steve Howe has created an imaginative and surprisingly plausible scenario for human return to the moon.... Heck of a good yarn with an unexpected twist at the end!" -- Harrison "Jack" Schmitt, Apollo 17 astronaut, geologist

From the Author

In the novel, I illustrate the emotional trials, the psychological pitfalls, the political obstacles, and the technical frontiers that must be overcome to establish a commercial base on the Moon. In this story, a private company puts one man on the Moon to hold onto survival by his fingertips and build a base, for profit, in which future explorers can survive. Cut off from Earth, the lone adventurer must survive not only the hostilities of nature but of his fellow man. I believe that you will see that this book provides a unique perspective both in the viewpoint of the lone adventurer isolated on the lunar surface and in the front-edge technologies being developed in the Nation's leading research centers.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever read., June 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Honor Bound Honor Born (Mass Market Paperback)
Most sci-fi books these days focus more on the "fi" and less on the "sci." This usually makes the books seem ignorant and dull. This is not the case, however, with Honor Bound. This book brings real life physical and technological science in to play and creates a remarkably possible scenario. I was thoroughly impressed and hope to see more works from Dr. Howe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read! S.D. Howe puts science back into SCI-FI., December 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Honor Bound Honor Born (Mass Market Paperback)
Dr. Howe writes a book worthy of praise for the fictional story and worthy of praise for the factual scientific background. Hawk, Rowdy, and company are well developed characters and the whole story moves along at a brisk pace. Exciting and refreshing. SCI-FI returned to the roots. Buy it, put it alongside your Asimov.
