Life in a Divided World, Growing up in an Honor, a place dominated by women, fourteen year old Teq can think of nothing beyond the day when he is old enough to have his Drumming and leave to join the men of the Wilders. The only man in an Honor is the Sieur, whose place can be challenged by a rogue Wilder at any time. When the Challenge comes, Teq is warned of the danger that awaits all male children with the change of a Sieur, and is helped to escape by his doomed mother. Galt, the deposed Sieur, follows him. They hear about a place called the Town, and go there together to try their luck, only to find this male-dominated society will not let them leave. Galt manages sufficient advancement among the men to reach a position of authority. It takes years for Teq to gain any freedom at all – years of fighting and rebellion. When he does escape he is a man full grown who discovers danger in the desert and the mountains before he can mold a place for himself and the beautiful maid of the Sea People with whom he falls in love.
