5.0 out of 5 stars COMPELLING!, June 16, 2009
This review is from: Honor Defended (Paperback)
The Major is back in book two of the Citizen Warrior Series, "HONOR
DEFENDED." As we learned from HONOR DUE, the Major is a kindhearted,
caring, family man. He is also the Vietnam vet who will not allow
anything to cross his path when it comes to hurting innocent citizens,
especially his friends, and family. While still mourning the death of
one of his War Brothers, he receives notification of a horrifying murder
and kidnapping involving a friend. Carmen was kidnapped, and her husband
who was an American soldier and home from Iraq was beheaded, then their
home was set on fire. The Major calls in his troops, and begins the
investigation. Does Carmen return to safety, and where is her vehicle?
How is it possible that twelve terrorists wind up in someone's backyard,
why was it that easy? How many battles and interrogations will the Major
face? Do the Major's Warriors seek revenge, and is justice served? Embrace yourself, put on your seatbelt, and enjoy the greatest thrill
ride you've ever endured! The setting in the great NorthWest is perfect
for the action-packed adventure to take place, the story is engrossing,
and the characters come to life once again. I recommend this novel to
all mystery lovers who enjoy thrillers, with humor, and compassion. The
plot consists of hard-hitting action, and is emotional, and heartwarming.
When the Major realizes that the crime committed was no random act of
violence, the fireworks begin, tension is at its highest peak, and the
adrenaline is flowing. The bond between the Warriors is stronger than
ever as excitement explodes, while the hunt begins. D.H. Brown penned
an incredible breathtaking adventure as his Masterpiece becomes a tribute
to Vietnam vets. "HONOR DEFENDED" is as compelling as Steven Spielberg's
"SAVING PRIVATE RYAN" with Tom Hanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first, June 8, 2009
This review is from: Honor Defended (Paperback)
Again, once I started to read this novel, I had to keep reading because I thought that I would miss an important detail that lead into the next chapter, missing out on some of the action. This is an outstanding mystery novel that has to be read though & through. Then read again to find the parts you missed the first time.
Thank you Mr Brown for your great talent of suspenseful & creative writing. When is the next book due?

5.0 out of 5 stars An action-packed thrill ride from cover to cover, June 7, 2009
This review is from: Honor Defended (Paperback)
Does one have to be an active member of the military to fight the war on terror? "Honor Defended" is another novel in D.H. Brown's citizen warrior series following the discharged Major Westfall as he returns home. When a close friend meets a gruesome end and the friend's wife gone missing, Major Westfall isn't going to let his civilian life prevent him from getting to the heart of the matter. An action-packed thrill ride from cover to cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honor Defended... Going for the Gold in a Major way!!!, May 21, 2009
By
This review is from: Honor Defended (Paperback)
If D.H. Brown's vanguard novel, "Honor Due," was a silver-medal-winner from the Military Writers, then they had best be giving some serious consideration to awarding a gold medal for the follow-up story, "Honor Defended." If it isn't deserved, then I will eat my greasy, old, submarine ball cap. I'm having a little trouble finding the right words to give it the merit it deserves. I can't remember reading a more "port-arms and kick-a** storyline in some time. The attention to detail, throughout, just compounds an already razor-like tension, as the Major and his special-ops cohorts uncover yet another under-the-radar terror operation on American soil. The writer's "warrior quote" subtitles, at the beginning of each chapter, were fine icing on an already excellent cake. I was thinking of one quote by Orwell ("Because rough men stand ready in the night to do violence in our behalf") when the author included it. I do enjoy the Major's work. Am looking forward to his further exploits in the third installment in the series, "Honor Redeemed," when it comes off the presses. Just one thing more. We WILL be seeing more of the Major in the future, won't we??? Kudos again!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Major is back, and he brought reinforcements!, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Honor Defended (Paperback)
HONOR DEFENDED picks up right where HONOR DUE, Brown's first award-winning book, left off. Barely settled in after avenging the death of his War Brother, Major Westfall is once again called upon for help when his neighbor's sister is missing. The Major, always ready to help a friend, rushes to her home to find it on fire, with her husband decapitated on the floor. He quickly finds out that this was no random act of violence, and that terrorists may literally be in his own backyard. What follows is a non-stop whirlwind of excitement as the Major dusts off his Special Forces skills, and along with some other operators, goes forth to pursue a type of justice that above the typical court system.

D. H. Brown has a gift for story telling. His stories are written first person, enabling him to use his own experiences seamlessly through the action. This creates a character depth that most authors can't seem to find. Regardless of your feelings about warriors, war, or special operators in particular, you can't help but love the Major. His sometimes cold, been-there, done-that exterior parts every so often to show true emotion and humor that is the basis for the bond between warriors. Even more than his first book, I just couldn't wait to turn the page, and from page 3 on could not put this one down. I was honestly sorry when it ended!

Exciting, gripping, and well-written, this one is a keeper for Vietnam vets, special forces operators, or those that love a good action narrative told in first person. Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your Honor is Safe With The Major!, April 7, 2009
This review is from: Honor Defended (Paperback)
Honor Defended, the second book in the Citizen Warrior series by D. H. Brown is not only just as exciting an adventure as the first book, Honor Due; but, in many ways, it more effectively illustrates the power of citizen warriors!

Wouldn't it be an amazing thing if citizens were able and willing to share and be responsible for curbing and eliminating violence in our communities? Oh yes, there are programs like neighborhood watch. There are methods by which you can report crimes you've seen. But what if, by using our former professional soldiers, who have been trained for combat and law enforcement, we really did have brave citizen warriors "protecting our backs"? I, for one, would quickly relocate to the northwestern part of the United States where the Major resides!

There really was no choice for the Major! When he learned that a soldier, home from Iraq, had been beheaded and then burned, and his wife had been kidnapped, the only thing that he could do was just what he did. He took the challenge, began his investigations, pulled together his team, and went after those that had invaded his territory.

And indeed they had invaded. A small cell of 12 terrorists had landed near the home of the soldier. While it might not have been planned, it was clear by what had been done, that they had enjoyed their actions while stealing a vehicle and taking the soldier's woman.

Reading D. H. Brown's novels is not so much about "who" did it. It is truly fascinating to see him go into action, make his contacts, select what personnel will be needed, and who is in the area that can fill those roles. There are a number of carryover characters brought forward from the first book, including Black Dog, the Major's woman, a neighboring couple in whose lives the Major has brought excitement, and many former professional soldiers who live nearby or are flown in for the "exercise."

Carmen had been kidnapped and Jimmy had sought the Major's help. Carmen's two children were with Jimmy. The first success for the major was to find their dog, who had been wounded, and take him immediately to the children, so they could begin to hope again. He called in a friend to work on the dog...a doctor who would be needed to serve as medic for what was coming. Of course, doc was not too thrilled that his first patient was a dog but he goodheartedly fixed him up!

And therein lies the secret! The Major calls upon goodhearted citizens to use their best personal skills to aid a neighbor in trouble. As the team assembled, the Major discovered that he had a stowaway recruit--Carmen's son, Ward Junior, was determined to help. And so the Major adjusted the plan and immediately identified how and what this young man would be doing. In many ways, he was the star character in this novel, for he did much more than had been expected of him before the mission was completed.

Indeed, Carmen herself was a strong character, much to be admired as she faced all that happened, being captured by 12 terrorists, well, actually, 11, after she had had enough!

D. H. Brown's Honor Redeemed is coming soon. Readers, if you like action and adventure, have a love for the USA, and enjoy great characterization of our citizens, then you're already behind. I advise you to get Honor Due and this book, Honor Defended at the same time and spend a long weekend with The Major--you gotta love him!

5.0 out of 5 stars A timely Pacific NW hunt, January 30, 2009
This review is from: Honor Defended (Paperback)
At last the Major's back, along with his friends & family who we met in HONOR DUE.

This time, it's a freezing winter dawn & he's as grumpy as all get-out as he drives his old pickup through the forest, with Black Dog at his side, to answer a friend's distress call.

Barkeep Jimmy Crae's frantic: while his nephew & niece were staying with friends in town (Clallam Bay, to you outsiders) so his sister Carmen & her husband, Ward Holbech, a Marine Corps Officer, could enjoy some alone time while he's on R&R from Iraq, her house has gone up in flames, her vehicle's gone & so is she. Now they've found a headless body in the burnt-out rubble. Oh yeah, & the family's Great Dane's missing, too.

What can the Major do to help his friend? As it turns out, quite a lot. He can recon the beach behind the house for clues; pump the older-than-God librarian for useful gossip; listen to neighbor Carla Talbert's granddaughter chatter on about a broken pipe in the school gym & the janitor with a funny name, & catch the mail deliverer before she sets out on her rounds so he can find that janitor & pay him a surprise visit.

He also starts calling in his troops. The first, of course, is computer whiz Blik over on the mainland to gather intel & contact his brother, a Special Ops guy now retired & a bit bored, to fly up from Arizona. Then it's Combat Medic Donnie & a Makah Veteran Warrior friend from Neah Bay, & the Silver Fox, a legendary helicopter pilot working cedar shows out of Forks who'd saved the Major's butt a time or two in a long-ago war.

After a sneak & peek of an abandoned logging camp up north, the Major hares back to the Sekiu airstrip to meet the Citation & Kue, who's brought along some much-appreciated materiel & the Smith Brothers, fellow Warriors from different ends of the gene pool.

Then he calls neighbor Paul Talbert to join the party, & finally Jimmy himself, who arrives in the compound & hauls out of his Suburban a stowaway: his 16 year-old nephew, Ward Junior.

With Blik's expertise, the Major uncovers the link between the school janitor, where Carmen is likely to be & what the intruders' intent might be. Now his team prepares for battle.

For the ladies who've come to enjoy the Major's life & times, you'll be glad to know that his beloved Blon (the sister of Blik & Kue) high-tails it home from visiting her mother in Seattle to provide sustenance to his body, belly & soul.

In his trademark lean & atmospheric writing, D. H. Brown offers another thrilling hunting tale (complete with a drool-inducing arsenal of weaponry) of murder & mayhem in the West End wilderness of the Olympic Peninsula. This time the muscular action takes place over a 24 hour period with not a minute to catch your breath or count the consequences.

I could not put HONOR DEFENDED down until I'd read it all the way through! Creepy, emotional, funny & hair-raising with some Big Thoughts about commitment, heritage, healing & plain ol' git-er-done-ness.

Highly recommended, even if I am The Wife, & therefore biased.
