Eden and Matthew Benedict are newlyweds in 1967 when his F-4 Phantom Jet is shot down over North Vietnam and he is taken prisoner by the Viet Cong. This is Eden's story as she deals with the loneliness caused by Matthew's absence, the depression following her child's death, the interminable years of waiting, and the uncertainty of her life until she begins a meaningful career doing Red Cross work in a Veterans Administration hospital. Juxtaposed with her life at home is the horror of Matthew's life in Long Moc Prison Camp and later in Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi.
