A great story about the magic of baseball and its' rich history,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Honus & Me (A Baseball Card Adventure) (Paperback)
To people that love the game and its' rich history, baseball cards are magical and in this story, that magic is extended into the realm of time travel. Joe Stoshack loves baseball but he is not very good, for him getting good wood on the ball is simply hitting it. He lives with his mother and they are chronically short of money so Joe often does odd jobs. One of those jobs is cleaning out the attic of his elderly neighbor Amanda Young. During the cleaning he finds a vintage Honus Wagner baseball card that is worth a half-million dollars.
Surprised and happy, Joe also discovers that the card is magical, for when he holds it in his hands Honus Wagner appears in his bedroom. They become friends very quickly and Joe engages in an adventure of self-discovery and achievement as Honus shows him what makes a talented ballplayer. It all comes down to a belief in yourself, convincing yourself that you are good is an effective way to become good. Joe himself also travels back in time where Honus is playing in the World Series and Joe learns the importance of self-respect and character. Baseball is a magical game and that magic reaches across the generations. A lot has changed since Honus played, but through baseball it is possible for people separated by generations to understand each other. This is a great story with an important point about honesty, integrity and fundamental decency.
