Actually, it comes on whenever the hub is plugged into a USB port on the computer, even without the power supply.

This is an amazing package for its size. It adds three USB 3.0 ports to your computer that are downward compatible to USB 2.0 and 1.1. In addition it adds 4 memory card slots that are compatible with over 50 types of flash memory cards. In my attached video I tested 4 different cards and also USB thumb drives and it worked well. I also posted in the video some graphic data analysis of the data transfer speeds and the performance was very good.

The port comes with:
* A USB 3.0 cable to connect it to your computer. If you want USB 3.0 data transfer speed then you have to use a USB 3.0 port on your computer. The cable is 32 ½ inches long.
* An AC wall power supply that will power the hub and furnish power to the USB 3.0 ports and the memory card slots. The power adapter can use 100 to 240 VAC at 50/60 Hertz so it is compatible for overseas use as long as you take your AC wall plug adapters. The output is 5 VDC at 2 Amps and that along with the power out of your computer's USB3.0 port provides the power for the operation of this powerful accessory. Each USB 3.0 port needs to be able to supply 900 mADC. The cable length for the power adapter is 5 feet,
* An instruction manual

In my video I plugged in a Class 10 memory card, a memory stick, a micro SD memory card and a CF card and they all worked fine. I did some speed testing with three different speeds of USB thumb drives and the speed results were very good. Just remember that you have to share one computer USB3.0 port with the three ports on the hub so if multiple ports are reading or writing at that same time then the speeds are not capable of reaching 5 Gbps. The graphs are in the video but here are the fastest speeds that I saw in my testing.

DISCLAIMER: I've received a free, 'for review' unit from the distributor and I've reviewed a 2 other HooToo items in the past. I never promise or even hint that accepting a free item for review will result in a 'good' review.

For anyone heavy on 'cards' this should be 'it' because it supports all the formats that you can see in the product name with 4 different card slots (see pictures) in addition to 3 USB 3.0 ports.

The unit I received, while encased in cheap plastic, is well made and appears to be durable. I found it easy to take the various cards in and out and the same was true for plugging/unplugging USB cables. The unit is powered but there is no dedicated USB charging port. You 'can' charge through any of the 3 USB ports available but shouldn't get more on it than you'd get out of your computer's own powered USB slots.

One issue with the AC power adapter - it's not designed to fit well on a power strip where it will probably occupy at least 2 slots but should be okay if plugged into a wall outlet.

HooToo's device is light (2 oz.), quite small in size (3.31"*2.24"*0.94") and easy to set.

The distributors appear to be over-eager to please their customers. The manual promises a 12-month warranty and includes a '100% customer satisfaction' pledge.

I would recommend HooToo's 3-port USB hub to anyone who doesn't need lots of extra USB ports - a 3-port USB hub only gains you 2 additional ports - and deals with various memory card types relatively frequently. I would not recommend it if you are in a desperate need for extra USB ports.

Edit: The hub and card reader still works fine but I just discovered that Disk Management in my computer will not work properly as long as the hub/card reader are plugged into the USB. I tried hooking up the power supply to see if that made a difference or not; it didn't. I knocked off only one star because I don't know if the hub/card reader is interfering with the one in my computer and there is no easy way to disable the one reader in my computer to check it. Although I'm going to try a different hub without the card reader, I'm keeping this one in case I ever move my computer into a case that has built in USB 3.0 ports.

I already have Hootoo's equivalent internal PCI-e hub (HooToo HT-CR001) installed in my desktop computer, which I have been happy with for the most part (I didn't like losing a PCI-e slot on the MOBO and I had a difficult time installing it because the internal four pin Molex plug had fat, blunt, misaligned pins). It works fine for camera cards but it's a bit of a reach from my desk to the computer. Also, USB sticks plugged into the USB 3.0 ports stick out where I could easily knock them out or break something as I walk by.

I bought this hub so I wouldn't have to reach as far to plug in camera cards (sounds petty but I have bad shoulders) and I wouldn't have to worry about knocking off or breaking USB sticks or damaging the hub. The hub, etc. came well packed in a sturdy box that was easy to open (a plus at my age). My first impression when I removed the hub was it was so light it felt flimsy. So far, it appears to be plenty sturdy. I was concerned I would have to anchor it to my desktop, such as with Velcro dots, but I found all I needed to do is press down on it with one finger of one hand while inserting or a card or USB device into the hub. The USB 3.
