This is a fast USB 3.0 hub that is powered by your computer's USB port. It is ideal for a laptop computer to multiply your USB ports and take one port to 4 ports. The hub is USB 3.0 compatible but it is also downward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.

The hub is plug_and_play with my Windows 7 Professional Operating System and no additional drivers were required. This installation took 2 seconds on my computer. I did the tests on a large tower computer and the 12 inch long USB cable is too short for that type of computer. You have to leave the hub hanging either on the front or the back of your computer as the cord is too short to allow you to set the hub on top of your tower. The short cable is good for desktop and laptop computers and it is portable to fit into your laptop case or briefcase.

Remember that since the hub is powered by only a USB port on your computer that the power to the hub is split to power the 4 ports and to power the hub itself. That means if you are using a USB 3.0 port you only have 900 mA of current and if you are using a USB 2.0 port you only have 500 mA of current available. If you use AC powered device like a printer, scanner or some external hard drives they get their energy from their own power supply.

In addition the data communication bandwidth is split between the four devices that are plugged into the hub. You will never get the theoretical USB 3.0 speed but the data communication can still be fast. I did some bench marking of the hub using a very high speed USB thumb drive that is 128 GIG of space and has SSD quality speeds. I plugged in four items and all of them were recognized and worked on my computer.

This hub is quality built and works, but with an issue. It seems to draw excessive power from the computer. If I attempt to turn the computer on with the hub attached, the computer flashes error indicators and fail to power up. If I disconnect the HooToo hub, the computer powers up normally. After the computer has successully powered up, then the hub can be attached. The computer is not a lightweight, a Dell Precision T7400 with a 900W power supply. Somehow it is sensing the HooToo hub is consuming excessive power.

I received this product directly from the company, in exchange for my honest review on Amazon. I own three other USB 3.0 hubs and all are powered by AC adapters, thus this is my first experience with a bus-powered hub.

Here are my impressions following my experience using the HooToo HT-UH007 Portable Superspeed Bus-Powered USB 3.0 4-port Hub.

OUT OF THE BOX

The hub is a great size for tossing into your laptop bag, carrying in a pocket and attaching to your laptop. It's only 4" long, 1.5" wide and a bit less than 1" thick, with a 1' cord attached to it. It's very lightweight - only 2.65 ounces.

The cord has a USB 3.0 connector, which allows the bus to transfer at the older USB 2.0 and 1.1 speeds or the newest 3.0. (Bear in mind you must have a USB 3.0 port to connect to on your PC or Mac for the USB 3.0 ports to transfer at that speed. You must also have a device plugged into the hub that too is USB 3.0 equipped.)

This 4-port USB 3.0 hub works with Linux 3.0 or higher, Mac OS X or higher, and Windows (*98, Me, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 & 8).

In the included User Manual, which is very good (something unusual for these devices in my experience...) you will find English, French and German instructions. Cautions, Packing List, Features, User Tips, Troubleshooting, and Warranty info are all included in this manual.

This product comes with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee (in the manual you'll see the specifics). Refunds or replacements are possible if you receive a defective unit.

The build-quality is very good. Sturdy, yet lightweight.

**The manual in my box said '7 ports of USB 3.0 HUB', yet had the 4-port hub photograph and model number on it. The manual does talk about the 4-port hub however.

Edit from my original review:
I received the adapter this two weeks ago and after installing the driver it appeared to be working fully, network and all, in OS X 10.9 (Mavericks). After a while, though, I noticed a consistent problem happening, enough to change my review from 5 stars to 2.
On my Macbook Air (i7, late 2012 model), I use the adapter with 3 USB devices and a network connection.
Whenever I disconnect the adapter, OS X crashes.
Shutdown is fine, but disconnecting while the laptop is on, causes this crash.
Clearly it is a driver issue.
Hope it can be fixed.

Even if your mouse, keyboard and other devices are wireless, you still need a USB port on your PC for each one. My Lenovo PC has two in the back and two in the front, capable of charging my New Release!RAVPower® 7800mAh with Built-in Flashlight Dynamo-On-the-Go RP-PB09 External Battery Pack Charger.Powered by Samsung Cells.Includes Free Wall Charger and Bonus Bag. 5V 3A Dual USB Output. Fit for Android & Apple Device, Smart Phones, Tablets..., my iPhone and two other devices, but only if I unplugged my keyboard and mouse satellite USB plugs. This USB Hub has four USB ports that can handle all the juice you need for each one. It only measures about 2" X 2" and when plugged in, gives a blue glow so you know its working. The Hub is connected to your computer (backside is best) with a USB data cable. Whenever you are using a port, a small lit number lights up on top of the Hub to show you it is working (individual indicator LEDs). The only thing that I found the Hub does not charge is my iPad mini.

The entire Hub is plug `n play - no drivers are needed. The transfer rate, even when all ports are used is 5Gbps. The Hub is designed to protect your devices in the case of a power surge. I read in the instructions that the Mac OS X might have issues with instability with this Hub and the 2012 Mac Mini and 2012 Mac Book Pro are not recommended due to unstable performance. Basically it provides four auxiliary USB ports for all other uses. It's a bargain for the price. This product was generously supplied by the manufacturer for an honest review.
