4.0 out of 5 stars Some really really nice beats
Trackboyz are a pretty damn good pop rap production team (even though Tipsy is a clear rip off of grindin'). And this CD has some production that is killer:

Best tracks:
1. Morning Light (The kind of church type piano in the background really makes it stand out).
2. They Ask Me (another good song that would make an excellent single, even though some people...

Big surprise.

Pitiful.
Rappers like this little punk don't deserve to hold a microphone, much less make an album. He doesn't even know about the pioneers that came before him.
Sad.
I would recommend that nobody buy this album and stop supporting garbage music that is catered to 12-year-old girls, but I bet half of you don't know who Raekwon is either.

1.0 out of 5 stars 1-1/2 stars -- Just download "Tipsy", July 6, 2004
This review is from: Hood Hop (Audio CD)
Well, reviewer Kyle really summed up the feel of this album pretty well, but anyway, I looked all over this site, and I have to ask...are there any REAL reviews for this album? I'm not trying to downgrade anyone, but most of these reviews are one-sentence and are either one-star or five-stars -- and separate reviewers are literally posting the same review at least four times. That's really annoying.

But I digress. I was surprised when I first heard that J-Kwon was performing on the season finale of Saturday Night Live. He came out and performed "Tipsy", which I think is a guilty pleasure (even though we all know it should have been called "Clipse-y"). And he did put on a good show, so I decided to see what his album was like. And I'm sorry I did.

"Tipsy" is the only song worth listening to on the whole album. Everything else is horrendous, like "Welcome to Tha Hood" and the disgusting title track. And things definitely don't get better when he brings aboard wack guest stars like the St. Lunatics ("IC IC" -- without Nelly, I might add) and Jermaine Dupri ("My Enemies"). And that song really felt like Jermaine Dupri featuring J-Kwon (J-Kwon is only in one verse; not even the chorus).

I also wonder how long it took for J-Kwon to come up with some of these lyrics. Several of the choruses suck, like the confusing "Parking Lot": "MF this/MF that/F that b/F that cat/Let's get high in the parking lo". And "U Ain't Gotta Like Me" (which is a phrase I'm definitely coining) has the lazy chorus: "You ain't gotta like me/I ain't gotta like you/And I ain't gotta like you/You ain't gotta like me".

There are still some MORE trite efforts, like the obligatory hard-times-growing-up track "They Ask Me", and the obligatory honey-sings-the-chorus track "You & Me" (featuring Sadiyyah -- why is it always a woman whom no one has ever heard of?). And calling "Underwear" unlistenable would be an understatement. And the last track, "Morning Light", has him asking the Lord for forgiveness for his sins, and here's a thought...maybe a song like that shouldn't have swearing in it? And maybe the copy of the CD I have is inferior or something, because that song is over eight minutes long, but after four minutes or so there's just space. I thought there would be a hidden track or something following it, but there isn't; it's just space.

Hood Hop is definitely an album that will make my "worst albums of 2004" guide at the end of the year. As far as J-Kwon is concerned, you should just follow the advice I stated in my review title.

This cd is horrible!J Kwon can't rap and the first song he has on the radio he stole the opening lines from an old school hip hop song by THe D.O.C.He's not saying anything new that other mainstream aren't saying.Just put him in the pot of stew with the corny ass rappers. This cd blows!

1.0 out of 5 stars Are you surprised..., April 25, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Hood Hop (Audio CD)
...this album is terrible? Initially, I was planning to criticize only this so-called rapper whose "talent" is counterfeit at best. However, since this review could just as easily refer to any other "artist" in the rap game with a CD out, I'll just turn this into an indictment on the whole rap genre circa 2004.

Ninety-nine percent of rap that has been coming out since 1998 is beyond played-out. Let me see...throw out one verse about weed, another verse about getting drunk at "da club" and throw out another about how much of a "pimp" I am and you have summed up all any rapper can rap about these days. Rap has long ago lost the luster of Run DMC, Erik B. & Rakim and Public Enemy. Most of these rappers rapping about 20" rims and Cristal will be broke in less than 10 years (and I'm being EXTREMELY generous with that time frame).

I don't know who's worse, them for talking about the mindless drivel they talk about or all the people who buy into it and buy their CDs. It's not like there's nothing real going on in the world to get pumped up/ angry/ passionate about, but instead the rap scene feels the compulsion to bombard us with details of "how many chicks I got comin' to my hotel" or whatever other tired rap phrase they can plagiarize and pawn off as their own.

If my criticism sounds cliche and like you've heard it before, it is and you have. The mere fact that all of what I've just said is old news should be further support for the fact that rap today is a joke. All the rappers giving "props" to JMJ are too uneducated and stupid to realize that they are actually spitting on his grave by continuing to churn out weak beats and ignorant and incomprehensibly incoherent rhymes. But what these "kidz" don't realize is that not even utterring JMJ's name or how they miss Biggie or 2pac in their songs or in their album jackets can save their weak rap career prospects (which never should have had a chance to begin with).

ZERO stars...get back in the studio, JKwon, and pray for a real rapper to come in who you can lip-sync over for your videos. That's the ONLY chance you have for anyone to remember your name this time next year.

3.0 out of 5 stars I love tipsy, but the album version is disappointing, March 31, 2004

I've been obsessed with the song Tipsy since I heard it on the radio last month and I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed with the CD version of the song because he says "b*tch" instead of "club". Now I'm not opposed to bad language, quite the contrary - I hate it when someone sends me the clean version when I've ordered the explicit version - but I just don't think the word "b*tch" sounds as good as "club" in the refrain. It just doesn't have the same power and the hook just isn't as strong as a result. It's frustrating to listen to. They could have at least included the radio version as well on this CD but they didn't. I guess I'll have to buy the CD single (or was that all a part of their plan? Hmmmm...)

The rest of the album is pretty good if you like Nelly and the like. Personally I think rap peaked with Public Enemy, but there are still some gems on this joint.

1.0 out of 5 stars This album sucks., September 16, 2004
This review is from: Hood Hop (Audio CD)
If you are into real hip-hop, you would stay as far away from this album as possible. "Rappers" like J-Kwon, Cam'ron, Nelly, Cassidy, etc, etc. are all doing their part in contributing to the downfall of hip-hop.

If any of your frineds recommened this album to you, they aren't your friends. It's THTAT BAD.

And having one guy come on and post about a million five star reviews isn't doing any good.

I should of known what I was going to get when I bought this album. This is an example of pure trash. The only worthwhile song is the single "Tipsy." Other songs are pointless and are like every other song. "Underwear" "Hoop Hop" and "Show Your Ass" are songs that give me a headache just listening to them. Save your money and buy something else. This album does not need anyone's support.

By now you've all heard the bubble-gum pop song "Tipsy". It's been overplayed on the radio and TV for several weeks now. Even that song is just a beat that Jermaine Dupri bit off of the Neptunes from "Grindin'". J-Kwon's lyrical talent is exceptionally bad. His rhymes are very simple and can be matched by the average person walking the streets. It doesn't even seem like this kid is trying to make good music. JD just found someone in the street willing to help him make a quick buck and he found J-Kwon. Based on "Tipsy", I didn't even buy this album but I just borrowed it from a female friend. The best track by far is "Hood Hop". J-Kwon at least puts some effort into it. It's about 3/5 and the rest of the tracks are on the same level as "Tipsy". My advice, AVOID THIS ALBUM AT ALL COSTS. I would tell you to download it but it's not even worth that much. If you like party songs then just download "Tipsy" and "Hood Hop" and put them on a mix cd. By buying this album you're just contributing to the dumbing down and destruction of hip-hop culture. Real heads know what I'm talking about. If you want good new hip-hop music then buy Ghostface's Pretty Toney Album instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars NELLY, CHINGY, J-KWON ALL THE SAME PERSON?, April 14, 2004
This review is from: Hood Hop (Audio CD)
To start off I would like to say that this is the most unoriginal rap artist I have ever heard. The beats are weak for the most part, other than the single "Tipsy." But you will get sick of that song really fast because of the simplicity of the beat. He is only 17 so what does he know about getting "Tipsy" anyway, It only takes him 2 beers. St. Louis rappers are getting old with all of this HEERRRE and THURR crap and J-Kwon isn't helping matters. I suggest some rap from the real south.
