It's hell in the Hood...,
This review is from: Hood: An Urban Erotic Tale (Paperback)
"Hood" focuses on similar problems that the characters faced in other Noire novels: drugs, hustlers, addiction, sex, and violence. I had a hard time getting into the pre-teen sex scenes with this one though.
The story begins with Lamont (aka Hood) as an 11-year-old child who has to face adult situations because his parents are absent from his life. Overall, Hood is a decent kid who gets caught-up in the street life to survive. Hood is about 18 or 19 years old when the story ends, and by then he has seen and done things that hopefully most of us will never face in a lifetime. I am an avid Noire fan, so I'll continue to support her writings. I can't wait to read Noire's next book.

"Hood" was a great book! I was hooked from page one. Noire did her thing, I always know when I get a Noire book it's gonna be a sure nuf page turner!
Lamont aka Hood never had an easy life, he started out on his own at age 11 trying to take care if his baby brother Moo on the cold streets of Brooklyn. Their mom Marjay is a crackhead who leaves them to fend for themselves. Hood grows up and gets involves in the street life 100%. Hood's life is never easy and the people he loves most always seem to hurt him or leave him. This story had me hooked and the parts about Moo had me in tears literally, I could feel the pain and hurt. I also felt bad for Zena, and her baby Dreka. This is a must read Noire does not dissapoint!!

Another street novel... 3.5 stars,

This review is from: Hood: An Urban Erotic Tale (Paperback)
This was a pretty average run-of-the-mill street novel. It did keep me reading but that was only because I wanted to see how this novel wrapped up. This novel has plenty of sex and violence and that is pretty much what drove this story. I really wish the brutal magic that was used to write "G-Spot" would show it's face again in this author's work.

Perpetuity....,
This review is from: Hood: An Urban Erotic Tale (Paperback)
As a disclaimer, I must say that I have previously read and enjoyed Noire's novels "G-Spot", which subsequently became one of my favorite urban fiction novels, and "Candy Licker" which, while enjoyable, seemed like a carbon copy of G-Spot; however, I was a bit disappointed in this output. I was aghast at the level of brutality displayed in this novel. I've always cringed when people loosely use terms such as "propriety" and "morality" but this book completely lacked heart. There was not one redeemable character throughout the entire novel, save for the title character and maybe one other, and each characters disintegration was painful to read about. Furthermore, it's becoming a bit monotonous to read about a female's deterioration as the result of the loss of a man. The novel started out with potential but lacked follow through.

Noire's best....,
By
This review is from: Hood: An Urban Erotic Tale (Paperback)
I have read all of Noire's novels and for the most part have liked them all. However, I feel that Hood is by far the best one. I just seemed to connect so much with the characters and could feel their desparation, pain, and struggles. I also appreciate the message of the importance of getting tested for HIV.

then you should definitely read this book. I have read all of Noire's titles and have enjoyed each one, but this one is far more my favorite. This story showed so much. The ups and downs and the highs and lows of coming up in the hood. The character Egypt some cant understand how she can let herself go so fast... but when everything u have ever known has been taken from u, your life can take a turn for the worst... as Noire so vividly displayed.
Noire never cease to amazes me when it comes to her characters cause there is always one who u just want to jump in the book and whoop on and the character in HOOD is DREKO. Noire u got another winner girl keep up the good work

"An Emotional Rollercoaster for Hood",

This review is from: Hood: An Urban Erotic Tale (Paperback)
If I have to say so, I think this is one of the best books of the year!!! Noire has definitely stepped up her game with "Hood". This book was so very powerful, it elicits so many emotions.
From the beginning of the story, it pulls at your heartstrings with the two homeless brothers thrust out in freezing cold with no one to turn to, no one to care but eachother, and 'Hood' is a soldier from beginning to end. WOW!!!! He takes every situation that he is dealt with like a old soul, he may get shaken but he never bows down. Noire introduces so many characters with that neighborhood 'ghetto shine' that all have get money mentalities and are all awaiting anxiously for the next one to slip up so that they can swarm in like vultures. Hood finds love with his hero, Fat Daddy's daughter, Egypt. Egypt is all that, as long as she's shielded from the reality of the cruel world. There's the white trash of the neighborhood, Sackie and his weak sister, Zena, that are attached to Hood and Egypt. Then there's the darkchild, Dreko, that evil lurks within him from sunrise to sunset. These characters are all living in the ghettofabulosity of the streets. Join in this amazing ride as Noire unfolds this drama-filled, emotional, sensational story of life with all of its hard knocks that evolve with murder, drugs, death, and see who has the heart to go to hell and overcome all its hellacious endeavors. Noire deserves more than 5***** for this one!!! I take my hat off and give you major KUDO's!!! Wow!! Simply amazing!!! Riveting, captivating, page-turning, heart-stopping, reading!!!!

It was good, but not great!!!!,

This review is from: Hood: An Urban Erotic Tale (Paperback)
I am an avid reader of all genres, so when i went into a local bookstore looking for some new reading material, Hood: An Urban Erotic Tale, definently caught my attention, but after spotting the word "erotic" i knew i was going to purchase this novel. After coming home and perusing the pages of this book, one thing is for certain: there is nothing erotic about this book, unless you count crude descriptions of teenaged sex, child molestation, and drug induced orgies as such.
The only thing that redeems this book, are the accurate descriptions of, and the inevitable consequences of what living in the fast lane can bring. Noire, does a good job of painting a realistic picture of the hardships that come with living this kind of life. The author even goes as far as addressing HIV and AIDS, but in the same breath contradicts herself by stating that BET's Aid's awareness campaign, "wrap it up," is nothing more than paid actors who know nothing of the perils of "hood" life. All flaws, sexual deviency, and mysogyny put aside, i still, nonetheless would recommend this book. At times Noire seems to lose focus, and one wonders at times whether her intent is to glorify, or warn others of going down the wrong path. Ultimately, the characters shine through, even though at times, Noire's literary talents are in question. You will laugh, you will cry with these characters, as they struggle through this cold world. But will they prevail? Read and find out. |
