Editorial Reviews

Review

”A first-rate study by one of the leading members of the new generation of scholars of the Ku Klux Klan. Lay offers the first look beneath the hood and robe of the Invisible Empire in a northeastern stronghold.”

-Robert A. Goldberg, author of Hooded Empire: The Ku Klux Klan in Colorado

”A welcome complement to recent work on the Klan in the South, West, and Midwest. This beautifully written, exhaustively researched, and even-handed study of the KKK in Buffalo is a model for future Klan scholarship.”

-Larry R. Gerlach, author of Blazing Crosses in Zion: The Ku Klux Klan in Utah

I ordered this book after a Google search on the terms Klux & Niagara - having grown up in Niagara County and not having heard of Klan activity in that area. This book was actually much more focused on Buffalo and Erie County in the early 1920s, but did have a couple of references to Niagara County. It was a good mix between an academic treatise (heavily footnoted) and a "readable" treatment of the subject. The audience for this book is probably quite narrow, but it is something that should be in libraries in WNY, allowing casual browsers to stumble across it.
