Best in a long time....,
By R. Bodoano (Belair, MB Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hoodoo Sea (Paperback)
When I started reading Hoodoo Sea, I couldn't stop. I read from cover to cover in a matter of hours. The book is very well written, keeps you in suspense until the very end, where you don't want to end.
Growing up in Manitoba, I could see the places he was describing in the book which was awesome for me. The book was easy to read and had the reader in its grasp the whole book. If you like Stephen King novels or novels like it, you'll love Hoodoo Sea by Rolf Hitzer.

A Good Read,

I really enjoyed this book right from the start when the 4 main characters were given their briefing orders for this historic flight.
As their spaceship entered the Bermuda Triangle strange things happened to their instruments that they couldn't control, they lost contact with Mission Control, they were in total darkness and, as they were all beginning to feel scared and helpless, they were then surrounded by a bright blue light and appeared to descend to the ground. This seemed to be in the middle of a clearing surrounded by a forest. We were then introduced to what seemed to be primitive cavemen hunters who lived there and who could talk English and even drank chamomile tea! I was constantly wondering where they had landed -- on another planet -- have they travelled back in time -- or among some long lost tribe deep in the forest? I loved the way that the author kept us guessing about this right to the end. As the crew explored the area the story got quite scary, it actually seemed to be more of a horror book with some fairly graphic details (which I won't spoil by saying what they were!) Overall, a confidently written story with some twists and unexpected turns, nice short chapters with cliffhangers at the end of most of them so you just have to keep reading!

Science fiction is not the type of book I usually read but when I finished this book I felt like I just had to read more. This book is captivating and unique and at times sent chills down my spine. I could not wait to see what was about to happen next to Scott Read and his crew. The ending is simply jaw dropping. Very unique and thought provoking. Excellent job for a first time novelist.

Reason for Reading: I was asked to participate in the Blog Tour but I had never participated in one before. I decided I would this time as the plot involving the Bermuda Triangle was just too intriguing to pass over. I used to be into the Bermuda Triangle big time when it was all the rage.
Summary: Canadian Wing Commander Scott Reed has been chosen to command NASA's secret test flight of the first speed of light craft. Accompanying him is a crew of three. Everything goes according to plan until they enter the Hoodoo Sea (otherwise known as The Bermuda Triangle) where they see bright lights and the craft behaves in impossible ways eventually landing them in a meadow. What follows is a terrifying tale of evil and man's attempts at survival. Comments: I really enjoyed this book. Right from the beginning I was hooked. The plot was amazing and took me places I hardly expected. A truly, original plot that was exciting to read. I had a sense of where the plot was going as I read but each time, bang!, something totally unexpected would happen making me feel uneasy the throughout whole read. My only complaint I have with the book is the dialogue which I found to be saturated with idioms (eg. "expect the unexpected", "I'm done like dinner", and "if I do say so myself", which I just now found by simply opening the book and quickly browsing). This did become a tad tedious (to this reader) but can be chalked up to first book syndrome. It's hard to pinpoint the genre of Hoodoo Sea. Obviously it is science fiction. But at times I wondered whether it was crossing over to the horror genre as the pure evilness that exists within its pages rightly fit that definition. Oddly, I also found myself wondering whether the book was Christian fiction. There are two strong Christian characters and the feel had me looking up the publisher halfway through to see if this was from a Christian publisher, but no, it wasn't. A truly fascinating mixture of genres in a top-notch plot that kept me enthralled from beginning to end. Speaking of ends, I absolutely loved the unexpected ending! It leaves me wanting to see what Rolf Hitzer will come up with next. Recommended!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up Hoodoo Sea but as soon as I started reading it I was captivated. The story had interesting characters, unexpected turns of events and a very unique story line. I found this book suspenseful and full of mystery, you didn't want to put the book down. The ending was completely unexpected which was refreshing to read. I can't wait to see what the author, Rolf Hitzer will write next...I'll be waiting.

Fascinating...,

So did not see the ending coming. Very interesting.
Refreshingly clean. Writing could have used more polishing, and the editing wasn't amazing, but the story was quite good. Looking forward to seeing what this author does in the future.

Bridget's Review,
This review is from: Hoodoo Sea (Paperback)
Scott Reed has been given the chance to be the first person to test out the new speed of light ship in space. The American people are not aware that this device even exists. The good outweighs the bad according to Scott. He could be known throughout history for being the first to accomplish such a task. If he fails, well, anything is possible.
Everything seems to be going according to plan. Just when the crew thought they were in the clear, they stumbled into the Bermuda Triangle. I love stories about the Bermuda Triangle. The whole thing is fascinating to me. I found this to be a stellar novel with loads of suspense.

Excellent job...I didn't know what to expect when I first opened and started to read the book. Needless to say, the book was an enjoyable read and had me captivated throughout. I must say that I had no idea how it was going to end and I was surprised at the finish. The ending of the book is one of the most unique enidngs I have read. I would recommend this book to anyone. Job Well Done! I am looking forward to your next novel!

A Fantastic Read,
This review is from: Hoodoo Sea (Paperback)
I read this book as a recommendation from a friend and was completely enthralled by this story. The narrative was easy to read, but also had some sophisticated ideas and twists.
At the end of this story I immediately wished that there was more, and I eagerly await the author's next book. |
