Book Description

March 14, 2008
Readers were introduced to the graceful heart of Melanie Sue Bowles in her first book, The Horses of Proud Spirit. They learned how as an adult who knew nothing about horses she acquired her first one, Cody, a troubled Thoroughbred mare who taught her how to communicate with horses. One horse led to another, each one in need of a sanctuary from their previous lives of neglect or abuse. Thus began the Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary.

In Hoof Prints: More Stories from Proud Spirit we say goodbye to Cody just as the sanctuary is about to relocate. The move involves forty horses in three 53-foot semitrailers on a journey of over a thousand miles from southwest Florida to the hills of west Arkansas. In the new location, the Proud Spirit horses run free on 320 acres of rolling hills, living the life every horse deserves.

In this book you will meet some cruel people who have no idea how to treat horses, and some wonderful, kindhearted people who open their lives to the beauty of these creatures with so much to teach us. You will meet Cosmina, a Romanian orphan who finds a kinship with these horses, who have also been abandoned. You will, of course, meet the horses and two donkeys, one of whom can fly!--each one bearing a different scar, recovering at Proud Spirit in the warmth of the care offered there. Meet Sammy, the big beautiful bay Standardbred gelding, who comes and goes and comes again to his final sanctuary at Proud Spirit. Meet Jesse and her baby, Riley, the first of a whole barnful of babies! Learn how one dedicated trainer has found an alternative to the cruel practice of soring for Tennessee Walking Horses. Learn the ways of horse friendships: Meet big old Ranger, who eases Rosie from her mourning for Cracker, though it is finally Rebel and Gambler who invite Rosie to make a threesome of their twosome. Then there's Indigo, a very wild Mustang, who finally decides he can trust Melanie enough to greet her in the laundry room.

The PBS documentary The Horses of Proud Spirit, based on the first book, won an Emmy and is currently airing nationwide.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Horses of Proud Spirit (2003) introduced readers to Bowles and her untiring devotion to abused, abandoned, and neglected horses. Hoof Prints, her latest book, describes in more detail her horse sanctuary, Proud Spirit. Operating on the philosophy that horses have an integral worth unrelated to serving humankind, Melanie and her husband, Jim, provide a haven for horses to live out the remainder of their lives in safety, without stalls, and among their own kind. Her stories are a delight to read as well as wake-up calls to all who love animals. One moment she charms her readers with a tale about how she and her niece seduced a recalcitrant burro into a trailer, and in the next, she educates us on the ghastly practice of soring a horse’s hooves to produce a gait called the big lick. Bowles writes beautifully, adding to the pleasure of this celebration of horses and eloquent plea to horse owners to treat these magnificent animals with kindness and respect. --Pamela Crossland

Review

This book is informative, engaging, inspiring, and charmingly written--an example of one courageous woman's journey to make a difference in the lives of unwanted horses, and in doing so, make our world a better place in which to live. ----Linda Tellington-Jones, creator of the Tellington Method and author of The Ultimate Horse Behavior and Training Book

Of all the different things people do with horses, there is one common denominator among the ones who are great at it--a genuine love and respect for animals. Bowles affords these horses the dignity they deserve. ----Ty Murray, Nine Time World Champion Cowboy

The abandonment and neglect of unwanted horses is a growing problem. This is a descriptive, gripping, and emotion-stirring account of one woman's attempt to help. --Robert M. Miller, DVM, equine behaviorist

5.0 out of 5 stars Melanie Bowles has done it again!!!!, April 4, 2008

WOW!!! Another fantastic book from Melanie Sue Bowles, and another emotional rollercoaster for me!! Once again, Melanie Bowles has proven herself to be a wonderful writer who completely envelopes you in every story. After reading some chapters, I cried nonstop for several minutes, and after reading other parts, I couldn't stop laughing. I'm half-way in to the final chapter, and am already starting to get upset because the book is almost over! If it were up to me, I'd have Melanie sitting at her typewriter spitting out book after book just so we'd have another to move on to when we've finished the one we're reading! Her books, writing style, and the real-life stories of these rescued horses (like only Melanie can tell them) absolutely make you want MORE!! Melanie and Jim Bowles are ANGELS, and I thank God that Proud Spirit Sanctuary is available to the horses that need it the most. Of course I can't do it, but right now, I feel the overwhelming need to go to Arkansas to hug Melanie and Jim and kiss all the noses of all the horses even if it means chasing them down all 160 acres! PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK for everyone you know, not only for a great read, but to help the horses at Proud Spirit.
Thank you Melanie...now sit back down at that typewriter!!

5.0 out of 5 stars For The Love of a Horse, March 24, 2008

Guatama Buddha said . . .

"You cannot travel the path until you have become the path itself."

Fifteen years or so have passed since a special horse named Cody ambled into the life of Melanie Sue Bowles. Cody was the inspiration for her to take the first few fumbling steps of a new journey; to forge a new path known at the time only to the deep inner recesses of her being and the will to give something back to the world for the life given her. Melanie has since BECOME that path . . . the path on which a hundred plus abandoned, abused, or otherwise doomed horses have been given a second chance at a life every living creature deserves; merely the chance to truly be what they are.

HOOF PRINTS is a continuation of the compelling stories that rended our hearts, mixed tears of pain with tears of joy, in her first book, THE HORSES OF PROUD SPIRIT. Mel relates the stories of these majestic animals and her interaction with them with such passion, warmth, occasional humor, and honesty that any person whose ever loved an animal simply cannot get enough. The gauntlet of feelings are literally wrung out of you during the reading.

Melanie brings the often ugly world of animal abuse, abandonment, and in some cases just plain ignornance, out of the shadows into the light where it can be examined and dealt with in a way that serves all species, wild or domestic. If you buy only two books this year, Melanie's two books revealing the 'proud spirit' of a horse would be your best investment, and your best reward. I guarantee you'll never think of a horse in the same way again. Or any animal for that matter, and you'll be a better person for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melanie, Melanie, you've done it again!, April 4, 2008
This review is from: Hoof Prints: More Stories from Proud Spirit (Hardcover)
Melanie, Melanie, your new book, Hoof Prints, is a wonderfully, sympathic journey for all animal lovers. Thank you, thank you, not only for beautiful prose but for the dedication you and Jim are giving. And thanks to all of the wonderful friends who let these horses be who God made them to be: free and happy. Your words have expanded my awareness, broadened my knowledge, and enlarged my compassion for those sweet creatures. Your books have turned my fear of horses into heartfult compassion; now I just want to hug and kiss them! And that's saying alot for this grandma who has kept a distance from any animal bigger than a German Shepherd for many years! Your writing style is easy and a delight to read because it comes straight from your heart - keep it up, gal; only with the next book, please include a box of tissues - for laughter as well as tears.
