Sony ImageSoft's motto must have been, "If at first you don't succeed, try again and again until you either get it right, or run it into the ground." Such is the way they handled their movie licensed games, but they seemed to get better at it with time. There were five versions of Bram Stoker's Dracula across eight systems, two versions of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein between two, and now we have Hook. Two versions of this game exist across four consoles. There was a version unique to the NES and then there's this version which is largely the same on the SNES, Sega Genesis, and Sega CD with a few differences.

Based on the Spielberg film, Hook is a sequel story to J.M. Barrie's "Peter and Wendy" and it's Disney film counterpart "Peter Pan". The story follow's Peter Banning, a successful corporate lawyer who often neglects his two children, Jack and Maggie. After coming to London to visit Wendy the woman who raised him as a child. One night Captain Hook kidnaps Peter's children. He is then visited by Tinkerbell who tells him that he was the real Peter Pan and that if he want's to save his kids he'll have to come back to Neverland and defeat hook. She then carries him off to Neverland where he must train to confront the evil pirate.

Hook is a side scrolling action platform game. You control Peter as he goes all across the island of Neverland going from stage to stage. The gameplay is very simple, the A button attacks, and the B button jumps. You can't get much simpler, but it plays well. Peter's jump has a very slow descent which is very useful as it lets you carefully control your landing. At certain points in some levels you'll find Tinkerbell who will give you pixie dust to fly with for a brief while. Combat is somewhat reminiscent of Zelda II on NES.
