Let's face it: Stereo freaks like the person who gave this record a one-star review cannot be trusted when it comes to real music. Ignore the review, and check for yourself. Eddie's spirit and music are way beyond any star-rating system. The man wrote the book on New Orleans funk and R&B. The fact that he is also a survivor of Hurricane Katrina who lost almost everything due to the disaster, should instead make us do what we can to recommend people to buy his records and support him in any way we can.Eddie Bo is a true American original, in the very best sense of the word.

Respectful combo of classic parts I & II,

Respectful combo of classic parts I & IIRemarkably free from cheesy remix trix, this is Eddie Bo's much sampled classic Hook & Sling just slightly re-visited & tuned for modern ears by Rob Swift. Both sides of the 7" are combined with a tasty lil scratch or two here & there thrown in for spicy hip hop flava. If you know not of the great Eddie Bo, he's one of the great New Orleans Funk & R&B figures dating to the Chess records days, and still alive and kicking it down as I write this. If you dig The Meters, T.S.U Toronados or other instrumental soul sides you won't want to wait anotha minute to get this cut into your next classic funky mix.

Great songs, bad mastering,
This review is from: Hook & Sling (Audio CD)
Initially, I bought this for "Hook & Sling" and "The Thang Pts. 1 & 2" (both are hip hop/b-boy essentials), but there are a lot of other good funk and rhythm & blues songs on this CD.I rated this (1) star only because of the sound quality. This will not be an issue for most listeners, but I am very picky when it comes to compact discs. When I buy a compact disc, I expect the songs to sound "perfect." There are a couple of songs that sound perfect (Sissy Walk, It It's Good To You, & Just Wonder), but most of them were either poorly mastered or the source material that they did the mastering from was not good to begin with. They even took some of the songs straight off of 7"/LP vinyl (Check Your Bucket, The Thang Pts 1 & 2, Funky Jam, & Come To Me), and you can still hear all of the snap, crackles, and rice krispies. The songs are (5) stars excellent, but the sound quality makes this CD a (1) star in my book. To each their own... like I said, I am rather particular about the sound quality, and this will probably not be an issue for most listeners. |
