Fly fishing makes us think of fast-moving mountain streams, but in this video produced by fly-fishing mavens Jim and Kelly Watt, the virtues of angling in placid lakes are explored. Kelly joins fly-fishing instructor Bill Marts at a small and quiet lake in Washington State, and they proceed to deliver lessons on finding where the trout are and what particular techniques will pay off in still water. The importance of seeking out "local knowledge" from those who have already fished a lake is noted, and Marts gives good technical advice on tackle, stressing that the urge to "lighten up" on the leader in still water is actually a poor idea, as it puts unnecessary strain on the fish (the emphasis, of course, is on catch and release fishing). Hitting the lake water in small one-person rafts, the two anglers are soon achieving success, pulling gorgeous rainbow trout out of a lake that an inexperienced eye would pass by. The pace of this video is relaxed, but what it lacks in flashy graphics and snappy patter it more than makes up for with valuable advice for casting flies in venues that often go unnoticed. --Robert J.
