5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Book!
Every Black woman living in this country needs to have this book in their possession immediately! This book will indeed explain everything you wanted to know about life but were afraid to ask a man. Thank you Michael Porter for laying out the facts as raw as you did. This is a book that will save your life and enlighten you to progress independently. I couldn't put it...

Well, I thought one black man would be able to understand black women - but I was wrong. The author even wrote to white women and said that they could be a social conscience for the white race which they can not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, some of our Black men get it, October 12, 2006
regarding the plight of Black women in America today. Today, we see far more female heads of household than ever before. The whole popular culture attacks Black/biracial Black women on a daily basis and Black/mixed Black women are the fastest growing prison population.

This book talks about what people have said in private about Black womens' worsening plight. I hope Americans get a chance to read this book and to meditate, then do something about it because we are losing the fight in the Black community. If this goes on, the community would be only a memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST READING, January 19, 2006
By
No other group in this country has it as bad as the black woman. Let me tell all y'all my brothers even we as black men got it better than our loving sisters. See we might take it from the white man's world but then we come home and sadly all too often we dump on our black woman. Now the black woman she is out there also taking it from the white man & the white woman & she's got nobody to dump on. Know where I'm going here?

Look we see the denigration of our Black Sisters in everything from advertising to Hollywood to even porno.
Remember this... When they made Charlie's Angels they were going to use Thandie Newton but punked out & took on Lucy Liu instead. See it goes a lil like this: The white woman wants and demands to be the top. She is willing to share it with Latinas to a point and because so many of her men are obessessed with the Asian woman (which have the boyish type of body that the white man in his surrender to homoeroticism has desired and has been trying to force upon his white woman) But the white race will never allow truly the Black Woman on that pedestal. Never! Because our Black Sisters are not only beautiful and truly of the Feminine but they are Strong. The white woman could never withstand the competition.

PEACE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, June 7, 2007
Finally a black man gets it. I could not stop reading this book. Mr porter backs up his statements with fact. All Black women should consider this book a personal bible. Black women need to understand to overcome sexism and racism we must first love ourselves, fight for ourselves and depend on each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars READ&SHARE&SHARE&READ, February 7, 2003
Mr. Porter is dope. ALL will benefit from his insight and voice. His writes in the tradition of Jawanza Kunjufu and is grounded in the works of bell hooks, M. Ani, Amos Wilson, Angela Davis and F. Cress Welsing. The best thing about this book is that it is written in plain english, explaining all the sociological and political jargon and breaking it down for all to understand!

I do believe the book has been mistitled. Maybe he meant to call it the conspiracy to destroy the Black (or African) family. I say this because he makes it clear that the black family's existence is dependant upon not only the freedom of the black man, but is contingent upon the self determination and freedom of the black woman. He is definately gangsta and no holds barred in his convictions but sound and logical in his suggestions for black women (and all women of color)! He is clear on the source of the problem (and it's not black men...ha!)and even addresses other people of color and white women to really review their existence and look at the TRUE source of the problem so they can be free as well.

Now Now, do not be mislead........Although this is a necessity for all African people, particularly those in America, all people ready for liberation will cherish this piece.

Buy this as a gift to all those who think and who need to think!

This book is truly awesome. I recommend this book for young women of color, as it puts into words what we often feel on a daily basis regarding our plight in America. It is candid, truthful, yet inspiring and reminds us of the fact that we are Queens and must take our rightful place on the THRONE!

5.0 out of 5 stars This gentleman really tells some inconvenient truths. Bless him., March 20, 2011

Hard-hitting facts and inconvenient truths are what you will find in this book. Every black woman should have this book in her library. I am so glad to see that one of our 'black brothers' wrote this. This guy really 'gets it'. I found myself agreeing with a lot of what he was saying and saying 'tell it!' and 'preach it!' as I read. I also did a LOT of underlining in my book. Needless to say, I could not put it down. I very definitely recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Black Youth Addiction, June 23, 2009
By
This review is from: Hooked on Hoops: Understanding Black Youths' Blind Devotion to Basketball (Paperback)
Hooked On Hoops: Understanding Black Youths' Blind Devotion To Basketball.

This is a must read for anyone working with inner city black male youth. Kevin McNutt speaks from years of experience working in the inner city of Washington DC. He asks the difficult questions: Why are the majority of adolescent black males addicted to basketball and, to a lesser extent, football as the ticket out of their situation? Why do they neglect to value academics and see the completion of their education as a way out?

McNutt gives the reader insight as to why the addiction exists. Most urban black males do not have role models except for those provided through media like athletes Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan. Basketball is something they are able to embrace because they do not have to depend on anyone else and it is not expensive, just need a pair of shoes and a ball. McNutt challenges the black community to not place such high value on athletic dominance, but rather to create the highest value for academic success. As stated by McNutt: "for most youth, basketball will give up on them long before they give up on basketball."

Black athletes fail to graduate from college at an alarming rate except during the John Thompson era at Georgetown. Mr. Thompson expected his athletes to graduate from college, and 97 percent of his athletes did just that. The failure rates are the same regardless of the athlete attending a predominately white college or a historically black college. Collegiate basketball is big business. Parents should be aware when signing to a school. There is no guarantee for court time or academic assistance, let alone the continuation of scholarships if the athletes do not perform at the coach's expectation level. While not killing their dream, parents, teachers, and community members must help the youth have a second dream: a dream of a college degree.
