5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding "how to" and "preparation for" book., November 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hooked on Ice Fishing II - Panfish: Secrets to Catching Winter Fish, for Beginners to Experts (Paperback)
I purchased this book in advance of an ice-fishing trip to North Dakota a group of us are planning to make in January, 1999. This volume is so thorough, that I just ordered "Hooked on Ice Fishing Volume I" over Amazon.com.

This book saved me from making over $300 in unecessary equipment purchaes. I was thinking about buying a Flasher sonar unit for the trip, but descriptions accompanied by pictures of LCR units in this volume made me realize that one of my current units will work just fine on ice, and now I know how to accurately interpret the signals when the unit is stationary as opposed to moving in a boat.

This is one of the best fishing books I have ever read.

The initial start was boring for me, BUT I have been at this game for well over 50 years. The initial writings are for the novice, and cover the basics. Later on it became meatier for me.

The author follows the FLP formula developed by Al Lidner, but directs it toward the hard water period. He looks at each species individually (F). The type of lake fished, structure, and cover the particular species use in that type of water(the L). Then the presentations used under the particular lake, river, species, weather conditions, and stage of winter (the P)

I don't think it's worth the $60+ that some folks are asking. I bought a used library copy. With shipping and handling I paid just under $13 for it. I think it would be worth $20-$25 for a new copy.

As I said it is a text book, and I will review it every year to refresh myself on techniques for the up coming year.
