Takes some getting used to,
By Stephon Devante (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hooked (Audio CD)
I was very hyped when I realized Lucy was coming out with a new album. But after listening to the album twice through, I feel like her songs are either hit or miss.
A lot of that has to do with, I think, her shift towards a jazz or big band style. Her first album was really good but was definitely pop oriented. Her second album was a lot more towards the jazz end of the spectrum. Jazz is not my really my thing, but Lucy definitely pulled it off well and I liked Hot and Bothered better than her first cd. Hooked! continues this progression, which in some instances is a very good thing. For example, listen to Babies or Another Woman. However, some of the songs just don't quite do it for me yet. What I am trying to say is, this album may be one where some of the material has to grow on you. At least, I know it is going to be for me.

Simply outstanding, fun, simple, beautiful, and easily lovable. Great proposal for this genre, and all this adds up to a great style, tone, voice, musicians and overall great experience. Without any hesitation you will love HOOKED and this very talented singer, she hit every spot in this record. I am really surprised that this CD doesn't has at least 300 reviews *****.

Better...,

A major difference from the debut album once again.
It's not as much of a shock as it was when her sophomore album "Hot & Bothered" was released, I was caught off guard with that one. I was more prepared this time around, I had a strong feeling that this would happen again the next time around. You know what they say, First time "Shame on you" second time "Shame on me". Anyone who heard the first album would be confused about the next two. I knew what I was up for this time around so my rating is higher indeed. "Hooked!" is more acceptable, as it is a third release, When most artists decide to take chances. With "Hot & Bothered" I just felt it was much too soon to be experimenting and the songs on that album didn't have as much flavour as the ones on "Hooked!". "Hooked!" has a lot more personality/character than "Hot & Bothered". The music alone is entertaining, dramatic yet soothing. It's like a gumbo of all kinds of delightful instruments Xylophone, Trombone, chimes, Bells etc. Topped with Lucy's creamy vocals. Lucy also re-recorded two songs from "Hot & Bothered" for this release which are "Too Much To Live For" which is better than the original, It's a mellow version of the song and "Slow Recovery" which is also better than the original recording. "Slow Recovery" on "Hooked!" is the exact same song and style she just re-sings it alot better. I actually like the song now. Although this album is good it "does" take some getting used to. "He Got Away" "This Empty Room" and "Rag Doll" are my favorites. "This Empty Room" reminds me alot of The Dresden Dolls, Has that Dark Cabaret sound.

Three's the charm . . .,

Hooked! Is Woodward's third, and three's the charm - if the charm is a big, fat bauble on an index finger pointed directly at you, while feet fly up in the air in the background. Singer-songwriter Lucy Woodward continues her swinging trek backward from her generic, pop-rock start to a Voodoo-Daddy-influenced romp that's more 50's sensibility than 00's recklessness. "He Got Away" kicks off with "Caravan"-style drums. Peggy Lee's "Sans Souci" sambas carefree into a darkening night. "Purple Heart" lights a torch for a lost love. And then Louis Prima's "I Wanna Be like You (The Monkey Song)" recaptures the flirtatious monkeyshines, as Woodward's again dancing across your heart. It's not all retro heaven, though, as her cover of Nellie McKay's "Another Woman" addresses guilt and rationalization in a thoroughly modern, unresolved way, while "Babies" bemoans the biological clock in a bombastic ballad that's only half tongue-in-cheek. Everywhere, the band's precise arrangements and orchestral touches complement Woodward's sass and panache, until the final track -- a riveting, multi-part, a cappella take on Hoagy Carmichael's chestnut, "Stardust." Woodward goes backward to bring it forward. The melody haunts my reverie.

I've loved Lucy from the beginning - pop artist to current jazz chanteuse. This is fer best album yet - Ragdoll is worth the price of admission alone. A fantastic nod to the torch/jazz/throwback days with current and fun lyrics and lush vocals. I can't wait to see what she does next.

I'm a great fan of this genre & am always impressed when Gen Y can pull it off so well. Lucy Woodward has a gift: she bring you right back into the 30's, just like time travel. This CD is a great addition to my collection & I plan on continuing to use Amazon, as I have for years, for books & CD's. I love the input from your company,I find your "if you liked THIS....you might also like....." to be a great help.

Lucy Woodward has moved continues her move toward jazz and standards with her new CD Hooked. Her voice is rich and luscious, giving songs like Purple Heart an appeal that is almost salacious. I Wanna Be Like You (Monkey Song) and He Got Away are delicious jazz and Slow Recovery draws on classic 50's ballads, both in its rhythm and string charts. IMHO the cd's highlight is Stardust complete with finger popping rhythm and multi-part harmony.
If you're looking for the pop Lucy Woodward, you may be disappointed, but this record is great. Highly recommend |
