About the Author

At Hooked on Phonics, operated by Smarterville Productions LLC, we believe that every child loves to learn, so we focus on nurturing that thirst for knowledge with products that are fun, effective, and easy to use. We respond to the natural curiosity of a child and support families and teachers as they help children improve reading, math, and study skills. We celebrate every success so learning becomes a positive cycle that kids will love to repeat again and again. We meet all children at their level, engage their imaginations, and help them climb to the next level step by step. Every achievement ends in a celebration of success, an elevation of confidence, and an increase in self-esteem. As children master reading and math skills, they also lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning. Our goal is to make a difference in the lives of children by making learning fun and easy. That is why we have brought together a dedicated team of parents, leading educators, interactive designers, writers, and artists. By collaboration, research, and testing, we continually develop innovative products and systems that teach children not only to learn but also to love learning.

I ordered this because my son knew his letters and sounds, and I knew he was ready to read. However, the books I was using to teach him just weren't getting us anywhere so I decided to change course. I put the video in (very userfreindly system) and he started reading the words in the book right after we finished the first lesson. I was amazed. We do about 2 lessons a week and sometimes we just practice reading the words out of the book. I think the best thing about the program is the sticker reward program and the little tiny books the kids can read themselves after finishing 3 lessons. My son is so proud that he can read those himself. Now he can read to me at night just like his sister. I am very pleased with the system. Your child must know all of his letters upper case and lower and all of the sounds for this to work well.

I have been teaching my 4.5 year old son how to read. He is at the point where he can easily sound out 3-4 letter phonetically spelled words. He is able to read BOB books level 1, with good comprehension. A few months ago, when we tried to move on to BOB book level 2, he began to dislike reading and was getting very discouraged. I wanted to find a more formal systematic curriculum to use to teach him to read. I believe in teaching kids phonics first with a few sight words. I have many issues with Hooked on phonics.

Here are my issues.

1. I could not find anywhere that gave placement tests or even gave a clear description of what was taught in each level. I bought the wrong level as a result.

2. This isn't a phonics program. It is a whole word program with a bit of phonics thrown in. The Kindergarten level seems to assume kids already know all of the letter sounds. Lesson 1 didn't even review the sounds at all. It did not show kids how to sound out words. My son has mastered both of those skills, but I would expect to see those skills in a program marketed to kindergartners.

The program works by first having a kid watch a DVD. The DVD flashes words up on the screen and reads the words to the kid. It does group the words into word families. It first flashes "a""t" up and says "A", "T" (letter names not letter sounds) then it says "at". The DVD doesn't review the sounds of a and t at all.

The DVD then added letters to the front of "at" creating words. Again, there was no sounding out practice or review of letter sounds. It flashed up at, said at, and then put a c in front and said cat.

I have the PreK, 1st and 2nd grade sets. My younger daughter knows all her letters and I liked the other sets so well that I wanted to purchase the K set for her. It was nice because I discovered I could buy the set in 2 boxes and budget for it, rather than buy the set altogether as a bigger purchase. The only thing I won't get is the Animals DVD that Amazon includes with their set--which I am sure my kids would have enjoyed--but budgeting took priority.

I have been using the PreK set and How to Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons with my daughter. She solidly can read lessons 1-31. We are reviewing and repeating lessons 31-39 right now (just to let you know where she's at if you've seen this program). She is practicing and learning to sound out words with several letters. She also understands how to rhyme (which my older daughter didn't understand until she was almost reading fluently).

We just did the first lesson this week from this set. I was very disappointed. I have loved the other sets, but this set makes a huge (!!) jump between the PreK and K sets. There is only 1 lesson on blending two letters together (it is in the extras section on the DVD) and no written lessons. After teaching my older daughter to read, I think this program is asking a lot of a child who is not a sight word/whole language reader. This program is based on a fundamental understanding of rhyming and using that understanding to read different words with the same word endings. If your child does not understand rhyming easily, then I would not recommend this program. It will be frustrating, I think. With my older daughter, I let the rhyming go and she got it as we read more poetry and sang songs. It did not keep her from learning to read.

So I strugled helping my daughter to read. Even at 8 she does not enjoy reading although she is good at it and plenty capable. So now my son is 4.5. He knows letter names and sounds. He pretends to read books all the time. He is very interested in reading. I bought the level 1 of the kindergarten program. I am so thrilled with it. I like the work family/groupings approach. He is so excited to do his reading work every day. The first day of a new lesson we watch the DVD twice and then read the book. The next day we repeat the lesson again by watching the DVD once and then reading the book. At that point I let him pick a sticker to put in the book. I think this is definitely the right place for him.

I also think this program works with supplements. I don't know if it would be a perfect stand alone program, but is an important part of reading with your child and help them figure out how words sound. I was at an advantage because he already knew his letter sounds - he did not have to learn them as part of this program

Regardless, he is feeling a lot of success and is excited to read me a book at the end of the first unit. I definitely think my daughter would have benefit from this approach. The lessons are short, but you can always extend with the online activities. At this point we have not introduced the online pieces because I think the lessons are just the right length for his attention span.
