The Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read K-2 Deluxe package is designed for working with a child on reading skills at home -- probably with a parent, but it would also be a good material to use with a tutor.

When it comes to phonics programs, there are two main types -- those that teach letters first, and have the children build from letters to sounds to words (l->s programs) and those that focus on sounds first, and have the children build from words to sounds to letters (s->l). The Hooked on Phonics programs use the l->s method, as do the phonics programs in over 90% of elementary schools. What does this mean for you? Well, it has to do with why this program won't be a good fit for every child.

This program would be a good fit for:
* Children whose parents want to give them a head-start in phonics before school starts or over the summer.
* Children in schools where they don't teach phonics very systematically, and the parents want to give them a better grounding in it.
* Children who will be moving to a school that uses the l->s method of phonics, and the parents want to help them "catch up" to where their new class will be.
* Homeschooled children, whose parents want a reading program that requires no "ahead of time" prep work, and that is as efficient with time as possible, eliminating the cutting and pasting activities, etc., that take so much time in many reading programs.

This program would probably NOT be a good fit for:
* Children who are at a school that is already providing a strong l->s phonics program, but who are still really struggling. Providing more of the same is likely to be more frustrating than helpful.

ISBN 1601438761 - This set is a great bargain, considering the fact that it's meant to serve for up to 3 years. In order to fairly review it in a short amount of time, I got myself some test subjects, 4 of them to be exact - one each, aged 3, 4, 5, and 6. We're still using the program, long after I'm satisfied, because they're NOT satisfied. The idea of stopping when they're enjoying it seemed silly to them, so we continue.

Three separate boxes inside the large, handled box, contain a multitude of materials. CDs, books, flash cards and more. There is some basic instruction for the parent/teacher which is helpful because, unless you're previously familiar with the program, the sheer volume of materials feels a lot like Christmas - your first reaction is "wow, cool!" and your second is to feel overwhelmed.

I used each "kit" with the age group it's intended for, at first. I found that two of the kids were much more into reading and books than the others and that they found the age-appropriate material a little stale. Fortunately, it was the 4 and 5 year old who were more advanced, so I still had at least one child per set. All of them enjoyed using it, learned quite a bit and tested my skills, because they were often thinking outside THIS box. The materials were appealing, but the kids were quickly ready to spread their wings. I don't attribute this to the notion that the product works so well that the kids are ready for Dostoevsky, I just think kids are impatient.

My final conclusions - the product, especially the mix of mediums, really keeps kids engaged, although it helps to use it often and limit the sessions to shorter periods.

This is a wonderful program, especially for an auditory learner. My son insisted on doing a lesson every day, rain or shine. You will want to help your child with it as it is not self guided. I think it has made a huge inprovement in my childs' reading skills and motivation to read independently.

My daughter cannot wait to read! Every day she asks me to teach her. I've purchased several teaching tools for phonics and reading. This one (Hooked On Phonics) has definitely provided the fastest and best results. My daughter read the first book after just ten minutes of working with this program!! My husband and I were amazed.

I only have two problems.

First: The CD-Rom is not compatible with 64-bit processors. I've not yet been able to use it, but we plan to install it on one of our older computers. What we can see appears dated, with pictures of cassette tapes instead of the audio CDs actually included in the kit.

Second: The program is not terribly exciting, especially since we can't get the games to work on my laptop. What remains caters to one or two learning styles and that's it. I wish it included more drawing, coloring or handwriting, something more tactile and interactive. Hooked on Phonics is a lot of sit-down, repetitive "homework" between the fun stuff of reading.

I definitely recommend the program, but am happy I have other tools and books to supplement when my kids get bored. I got a great deal on this, so that contributes to my review. If I had paid full price, I might be disappointed. If you're on a tight budget, keep looking. There are many other teaching tools available for much less. They may not provide results as quickly, but you'll get your money's worth.
