Hooked on Phonics: Learn to Read Second Grade System

I've been looking for reading activities to do with my son, Drake, so his reading skills won't get "rusty" over the summer. I recently purchased the Hooked on Phonics kit for second graders and Drake loves it! He actually asks me to get it out and do the activities with him. I think the little successes he experiences every night make him want to continue with the program. Hooked on Phonics makes it so easy for the child to gain mastery of various concepts because the lessons are short and sweet and only focus on one skill at a time. This system is perfect for my son's limited attention span and I am seeing some really significant results.

Highly recommend if you have gone through the Hooked on Phonics Kindergarten and 1st Grade levels!! My son went through HOP 2nd Grade over the summer and is again a year ahead of his class in Reading! He loved it! It has really helped build his self-confidence and really amazes other adults with his reading abilities! If you have more than one child you plan on using this curriculum with, laminate the reading charts so that you can reuse them!

My son has improved his reading ability and has helped his self esteem. I encourage any parent that has a child that is having difficulty reading to purchase hooked on phonics.

I'm tutoring a 2nd grader, ESL student whose parents have limited English vocabulary. Hooked on Phonics allowed her to study English, specifically the basics of reading, with little needed help from her parents. I guide her through the exercises once a day and she repeats the exercises independently on her own. The results are pleasing to both myself and her parents.

Our kids are progressing fine with the Hooked on Phonics program. The CDs, books, and workbooks are well paced. Most of the books also have good, morally sound messages in them too. However, a couple of the books were complete let downs. For example, the book titled "Goblins" specifically sends disturbing messages to hide the truth from your parents, has the mother modeling impatient, baboon-brained reactivity, the goblins are busy trying to make their sticky-fingered vengefulness seem legitimate, and the dog spoon feeds the son all kinds of lies that the boy willingly goes along with. I realize that goblins are just goblins, but the people and the dog are spineless and awful role models. It was just yucky reading.

However, most of their books are uplifting, so I give them 3 out of 5 stars instead of anything lower. I had hoped that Hooked on Phonics would have been more morally strengthening. Why not strengthen character and reading proficiency at the same time?

My 2nd grade daughter has been behind in reading for some time and struggles to remember basic patterns. We finished the 1st grade Hooked on Phonics and are now using this 2nd grade one. First, she noticed that books in her classroom became easier for her. Then her teacher noticed a difference in her reading abilities and her reading scores in testing have definitely improved. In addition, she's doing better with spelling as well.

We take 30 minutes each day after school and I supervise as she goes through the systematic process. She likes following plans, so this format works very well for her. It's not a "light-bulb" moment kind of thing, but with Hooked on Phonics she's finally making steady, noticable progress. We are very pleased.

We are extremely happy with the Hooked On Phonics package we ordered from Amazon. The Hooked On Phonics great reputation is well deserved. The instructions are very easy to follow and the results are almost immediate. The price I paid with Amazon was a tremendous savings, and I had chekced several places on the price. Take the chance you will be glad you did.

My son is in the first grade. After the positive result I saw with Hooked on Phonics--grade 1, I decided to get Hooked on Phonics--grade 2. He is going through the material quickly and is now a much improved reader and speller. Wonderful product.

We got it as a follow up to the first grade system and it worked equally as well. My son breezed through the levels gaining competency and confidence.

Overall new condition. However, there were a couple of missing items. Some flash cards were missing and the small rings that held them together did not come in the box. Was able to make some, so overall happy with product.
