1.0 out of 5 stars Hooked on Traprock- Don't Bother, May 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Hooked on Traprock: Rock Climbing in Central Connecticut (Hardcover)
While Nichols has obviously made an exhaustive effort to document all the climbing routes in CT, many of the newer routes mentioned in this book are not worth repeating. The route descriptions and approach directions are accurate, but there are no cliff drawings. In a climbing area like CT where the climbing routes are so densely packed, line drawings would be helpful. Plus he wastes a lot of space descibing the origin of the route names. While interesting, maybe he could have saved the space and included drawings instead. His criticisms and pot shots of people he doesn't like make him seem very bitter.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, June 21, 2010

I'm writing to counter the review "Hooked on Traprock- Don't Bother". It is true Ken Nochols' book does not have line drawings but he clearly states why, under the heading Line Drawings. I find this book an invaluable reference guide by the man who put up most of the climbs in CT. I do use the Falcon guide as my first choice but often check to see what Nichols says about a climb. His grading is often different and he includes climbs that are left out of the Falcon guide. His section on Connecticut's geology is the best I have encountered and the writing throughout the book is both witty and to the point. I recommend the book.
