About the Author

Sherry L. Hoppe is a retired university president, a trained counselor, and an author. Sylvia F. Yates is a former respiratory therapist and recovering prescription drug addict.

More About the Author

After almost 20 years as a college and university president, Sherry Lee Hoppe retired as president from Austin Peay State University (TN) in 2007. Today, she works fulltime writing. A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE: Redemption of a hometown hero, Bobby Hoppe, takes readers inside her husband's historic trial for first-degree murder, giving a glimpse of "the man behind the mask." A subtle love story woven throughout the book reveals why she and her husband pledged to love each other 'til the 12th of Never. And, a surprise ending will astound even people who attended the 1988 trial.

Hoppe's SIPS OF SUSTENANCE: Grieving the Loss of Your Spouse was released by Wakestone Press in May 2011. The book, which includes Hoppe's own journey through grief after the death of her husband, offers tips on how to survive sorrow and find life again on the other side of despair. The author's next book, FACES OF GRIEF, was released by Wakestone in July 2011. This book includes 20 personal stories of individuals who have lost children, siblings, parents, and other loved ones. Though the tapestry of their lives may forever by woven with poignant threads of grief and sorrow, their courageous stories are testimonies of hope--hope that even though you will never get over your grief, you can get through it.

HOOKED BUT NOT HOPELESS: Escaping the Lure of Addiction, co-authored by Hoppe and her sister Sylvia Yates (Pine Rose Press, December 2011), puts faces behind the devastating words, "I am an addict." Through Sylvia's story about her 17-year struggle with prescription drug addiction and the stories of seven other recovering addicts, readers learn about the disease of addiction, how it inflicts injuries on the addict and his/her family, and how no one is ever hopeless.

Hoppe's latest book, DAILY DEVOTIONS FOR FINDING FAITH BEHIND CLOUDS (Pine Rose Press, December 2012), uses inspirational stories collected over more than 20 years to illuminate devotions that lift readers up with God's power and grace whether days are sunlit or cloudy and includes post-it meditations for each day to keep readers grounded in His love and care.

This book is a must-read for families struggling with an addicted loved one or those who know of a struggling family(and this would be almost eveyone). We follow the painfully honest story of beautiful, intelligent, athletic, middle-class Sylvia. It takes you through her descent into a real-life hell for 17 years, beginning with just one pill that she vividly remembers taking. She never blames others, but explains the emotional state that gets her to that first pill. While reading, I felt that I was right there with her during all of it -- the denial, the shame, the pain and embarrassment of disappointing and hurting her family and friends, but on the other hand, not caring what she had to do to keep getting the pills. Finally, we read of how she reaches the bottom, which is so painful to read, and her climb toward recovery by admitting she is an addict and turning it over to God. There are other stories of individuals who fought the same fight and got their lives back. It is very joyful to read about their recoveries and gives us all hope for our own loved ones who struggle. I also appreciated the researched information regarding brain chemistry, addiction, rehab, and the high relapse rate. I gained a new insight into tough love vs. what I think of as "firm, informed about addiction" love. The author, Sherry Hoppe, and her family learn to love and support Sylvia without being enablers. I recommend "Hooked but not Hopeless" to everyone.
