Book Description

Would you go out to a bar and pick up any random handsome man to spend the night with to mute the heartbreak of your long-term lover - your rock - walking out on you?

Caitlin Edison was so badly hurt by her boyfriend of ten years leaving her that she no longer wanted love, she wanted a cure for love.

After several drinks, one of her best friends suggested she indulge in a one-night stand, a mindless night of fun with absolutely no consequences, to help her heal.
At first, Caitlin scoffed at the idea, but the idea niggled at her and one reckless night, she plucked up all her courage and actually followed through.

There was only one problem - how did Caitlin end up with the one guy in town who wanted more than a one-night stand?

'Hooking Up' is romance at its best – exhilarating, surprising, passionate, witty, moving, enraging, frustrating, sly, worldly and wise.

When Caitlin gets the ride of her life, so will you. Hook up with 'Hooking Up', place yourself in the safest of hands and let yourself go.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fell short June 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After suddenly getting dumped by her long time boyfriend, Caitlin decides to take her friends advice and find a "one-night stand". She gets dressed up and heads out to find the man who's going to take her mind off her now broke heart. Caitlin meets Ryan. They end up back at her house, but in the morning her one-night stand isn't going away like she thought. Will he end up with her heart or did she just make a huge mistake by picking up some stranger?

I thought this book was going to be really good, but I was dying for it to be over. Caitlin whined and changed her mind the entire book. One minute she didn't want Ryan then she did then she didn't. The cycle went on almost the entire book. She had been through some emotional issues, but one thing that really irritated me was she was scared of her grandmother and finally got the courage to tell her off, but then wanted to talk to her again. It made no sense. She wasn't the most interesting character and whined a lot.

Then there's Ryan. I thought he was going to be this great, sexy guy, but then he kind of seemed like an unwanted stalker in the beginning and then he turned into Caitlin. He was indecisive and acted pushy and considering his profession, I expect more out of him. He and Caitlin fit together. They were both childish and unsure of how they felt about each other and acted like teenagers who break up and then get back together every other day.

Wasn't one of my favorite books and paying 99 cents was almost too much. I gave it two stars because the author did try to make it interesting. Not one I'd recommend unless you want to read a boring and strange love story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uummmm . . . we did read the same book right? June 8, 2011
By shelly
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was soooooo long. Not in pages but in context. Except the title, it was not great. Can one really be this self-absorbed? If you are looking for a romantic comedy, keep looking! Seriously, I didn't even snicker. The main character drove me to the point of insanity with her insecurity. I HATE WHINEY! I had to stop reading everything but the quoted parts just to make it to the end. Really. Save yourself some time, and check out a different book.

Hooking Up is a story about Caitlin Edison and her path from heartbreak to new love which could have been interesting, unfortunately, the author choose to write about the most mundane events in Caitlin's life, sprinkled with caricatures and over the top emotions in an effort to liven up an entirely dead story. Another reviewer called this book tedious and that's a great description. The best and tightest written part of the story is the sample. Unfortunately the rest of the story is excrutiatinly boring. The female protagonist isn't endearing, but weak and whiney. The male protag, a policeman, is creepy and stalkerish. (ie. after she refuses to have a relationship with him, he starts giving her tickets from everything from speeding to improper parking).

There is no real explanation given why Caitlin falls in love with Ryan, the police officer, other than he won't stop stalking her yet why would Ryan want to be with Caitlin who tells him time and again she doesn't want to have anything to do with him. While Caitlin's moroseness is justified by her evil grandmother and her breakup, it just seems to drag on forever.

Additionally, all of the characters, even Caitlin, are wooden. Caitlin's grandmother is an indifferent society bitch. Ryan's ex wife is a vindictive society bitch. Michael, Caitlin's ex, is an indifferent bastard. There's no life to these characters. It was 99c I regret spending.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just Say NOOO!!!! August 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ok, first off let me assure you I have no hidden agenda I do not know a rival writer and I am not now nor will I ever be a writer (very obvious I'm sure) but this book was horrid!! Do not be sucked in by any fictitious 5 star review because let me assure you there is absolutely no way in ?!$& this book can garner a 5 star review.

The female lead is the most uninspiring, whiny, irritating, non-sensical character I have ever read! And the male lead is only a fraction better. Both come across very immature and more than a little crazy. She more of the, "yes I love you, no I can't love you beacause I'm scared you'll leave me wahhh, wahhh, wahhh!!" variety and he being more of the, "I love you and care for you deeply after a one night stand and only speaking 5 words before the aforementioned event and because you don't love me I will become a stalker and that will show you how much I care!!" variety ( please read it and tell me that's not an accurate summation).

Take it from me and before you get sucked in to reading a book that will leave you frustrated and more than a little angry ( ok, I might have gotten a little dramatic here) ......just say NOOO!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book Shelf Book of the Week Selection May 9, 2011
By Anne
Format:Kindle Edition
Jessica Degarmo's latest novel Hooking Up (Night Publishing, 2011) is quite a study - albeit a fictional account - of the after effects of making decisions on the while on the rebound after the break of a long-term relationship.

In Hooking Up, readers have an inside look at Caitlin Edison, who is talked into a one-night stand following the breakup with her boyfriend of ten years. She brushes off the idea at first, but following several drinks, she "hooks up" with a random stranger. However, on his part, the one night stand is searching for something more.

This is a book full of surprises and passion. It's chick lit, but far above the average chick lit book. Hooking Up is a delightful read, with readers following every moment of Catlin's dilemma, the actual event, and its aftermath.

While written in the fiction sense, this is a book that, like How to Meet a Guy at the Supermarket which touches upon situations of everyday life, and done in a strong, original voice with just the right amount of added humor. Hooking Up is a perfect tale of love, love lost, taking a risk, and romance. Just wait until you read the conclusion...which I won't give away here.

Well-written, brilliantly detailed, and a story line that is far from boring, Hooking Up is one of my most recommended books in the chick lit genre - and this comes from a reader who doesn't read chick lit on a regular basis!
