5.0 out of 5 stars rally boy is the greatest!, January 3, 2002
This review is from: Hooks & Crutches (Audio CD)
i read somewhere that rally boy is more easily identified than classified and i think i'll have to agree. though they're one of my favorite bands, i have a hard time describing them. they're like the beatles in that they share the job of the writing and everybody gets a chance at lead vocals, but i wouldn't say they sound like them. i guess the closest comparison i can come up with for their sound is weezer, but there's a touch of pavement in there too, and they really make you want to dance! if you ever get a chance to see these guys live, it's a real treat and you should do it right away!
i listened to this cd at least 5 times in a row when i got it! here's a little description of each of the songs:

1. undrest -- my 4 1/2 year old niece loves this song. she insists that the answer to the question "when you break a big rock does it make a big sound?" is yes. we love dancing and singing along to this one together. it generally rocks.

2. stuck -- this one has a twangy sound to it as far as the guitar goes. lots of slides too. it's easy to get it stuck in your head (no pun intended). and ryan is an incredible lyricist.

3. the check-out -- this is the only song i've ever heard justin sing lead vocals on. it's a really cute pathetic love song. you kind of expect to see flowers and bunnies like in the twitterpated scene of bambi when you hear this song. wait, does that sound like i'm making fun of it? i'm not; it's fun by itself. the beginning reminds me of the cardigans' version of "the boys are back in town". this is another song that's fun to dance to.

4. low e -- a slow song. not like jr. high school dance slow songy, just slow. dan's voice reminds me of ben folds in this one. which is strange because his voice never reminded me of anyone else before. i love the chorus of this song, but i haven't figured out what it means yet. i kind of have a bias towards this song simply because my close friends call me "e".

5. slang tips -- this song has so much going on. shouting, layers, voice effects, and it even ends with a little bit of feedback. ryan sings lead on this one, but for like half of the song, dan and ryan have got this syncopated shouting thing going on. it really sounds cool even though i can't really describe it in a cool way. ok, this is rally boy's punk song.

6. submarine -- the first time i heard this song was at the w.o.w. hall in eugene, oregon. when they got to the part when it's just the guitar playing one repeated note to sound like a submarine, it was just echoing and bouncing around the whole place and it felt like we were under the sea in a real submarine and i've loved this song ever since. besides, the lyrics are great.

7. track 7 is not mentioned anywhere on the cd so i do not know what the name is. it might be my favorite on this disc. it's about, well i'm not sure exactly the story, but i know there's at least one vampire in the mix. it makes me think of buffy and spike's little whatever they have going on. anyway, the general story is that ryan is getting the what-for by some chick who's getting it on with a vampire and he hates it. there are so many metaphors and word plays in this song it's hard not to love it. plus it's all tango-y somewhat like the cure's "the caterpillar".
