If you love crime AND Victorian misery, you'll LOVE this book! It's gritty, real and entertaining. It was educational and exciting.

I love this kind of thing, an actual observational piece of journalism done at the time. The author was obviously an intelligent man who tried to paint as sympathetic a portrait of his subject as he was capable of. The result is a charming piece that is so engaging one actually feels disappointed when it ends.

An on-the-spot story from the Victorian East End of London with actual petty thieves, drunks and prostitutes providing the story line.

It reads in the style of an upper class chronicler interviewing a young Hooligan living in the London back alleys. Doesn't really present the atmosphere of life in the Victorian London back streets very well.
