Book Description

He's endearing.
He's funny.
He's a survivor.

Here comes Hooper, one plucky, spunky dog whose warm spirit and goofy personality are irresistible. Hooper tells his own dramatic rescue tale after being left homeless in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and taking a daring trip from New Orleans to New York to meet his new family. He tells of the terrifying force of Katrina, his trials in the shelter, and being the new dog on the block in a city far from home. As Hooper struggles to find his place, he learns to overcome his fear of water and faces down feisty squirrels as well as the resident bully and top dog in his new neighborhood.

In a moving tale of adventure and triumph based on a true story, meet this tenacious puppy who makes an incredible journey in search of home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Hooper is one courageous little guy! August 23, 2011
Hooper Finds a Family is a great, heartwarming story for kids since it will not only entertain them, as any good book should, but will also teach them valuable life lessons about hope, courage, making friends in new situations, and, most of all, love. The story is riveting (I am far from falling into the suggested age range for this book, but I stayed up well into the night reading!), as Hooper gets lost in the storm, struggles to survive, and finally makes his way to a caring new family in New York. His journey will capture your heart. It is also a powerful statement about the value of rescue organizations and their volunteers. Anyone who loves animals and anyone who is thinking about getting a dog for their family should read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gr. 4 Home schooling Novel Study October 19, 2013
By abcdvg
Found this book at the library. Am using it for Gr. 4 Novel study. Covers weather & bullying learning outcomes as well as language art outcomes. Such a sweet story! My 9 year old is an animal lover & could not put the book down and read it in 2 days. He even got his 12 year old brother to read the book. Told from the view point of the dog. The boys loved that it was based on a true story on an event that happened in their life time on their continent.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love dog stories! June 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This story is about a dog who survived Hurricane Katrina and loses his family and gets new owners.

Hooper is a clumsy pup. Watch him grow up and stand up to bigger dogs. He is a very brave and smart dog.

My favorite part is when Hooper stood up to the bigger dog named Mel. Mel said to give him the ball, but Hooper didn't even flinch.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs, adventures and the wilderness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Weathers The Storm October 29, 2014
A great doggie story for grade school children in the historical setting of Hurricane Katrina. It is quite but entertaining and endearing read, though harrowing in some parts especially during the struggles in the storm. My 10-year old daughter has this book on her list for her school's "Battle of the Books" and really enjoyed it! Skimming through it, it seemed well written and appropriately engaging for the age group it targets. Reminicent in ways of The Call of the Wild, but slightly tamer.

I liked how Hooper finally learned to bark and to catch a ball.I think it's neat that Hooper got rescued by such a nice family. I'm also glad that Hooper survived the storm. I thought it was cool when Larry finally started to like Hooper and stopped calling him Thud. I think this is an great book.
