Book Description

November 1, 2006
It was in 1914 that Mary Phelps Jacob set women free—from the prison of the corset. With a little help from her lady’s maid, this ingenious New York socialite stitched together two handkerchiefs and a long pink ribbon to fashion the world’s first-ever brassiere. (Jacob later sold her patent for $1,500—to a company that went on to make $15 million off her invention.) The rest, as they say, is history—a history that’s amply, titillatingly documented by designer Cheree Berry in Hoorah for the Bra.

The 20s’ flat-chested flappers, the 50s’ bullet-bosomed bombshells, the eye-gouging cones of Madonna’s Blonde Ambition–tour bustier: this provocative pop-up book reveals it all. The straps and the cups. The underwire and the padding. The elastic and the Lycra. The demure pink satin and the racy midnight lace. Hoorah for the Bra tells a tale that doesn’t sag and presents a cast of characters—mail-order moguls, brassiere-torching women’s-libbers, sweater-clad movie stars—who never let you down. Sure to be a bust-out hit, the book’s the perfect gift for any Wonderbra dreamer or Frederick’s of Hollywood vamp. To view the pop-ups, you just lift and separate!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Pop-up, April 17, 2008

This review is from: Hoorah for the Bra: A Perky Peek at the History oftheBrassiere (Hardcover)
This is adequate as an amusing, silly gift book...but that's all. Given the subject, I'd expect more fun and relevant pop-ups. Instead, boring or irrelevant pop-ups are often used. Next to an inclusion in the text of the word 'breakfast' is a pop-up of eggs and coffee; somehow, I doubt this is what buyers were hoping to find. Other pop-ups are similarily unrelated, unimaginative and unimpressive.

If you happen to be looking for a silly, light gift book on bras with an odd twist, this would be perfect. If you are looking for a really fun pop-up book, you will likely be rather disappointed. Instead, I'd advise checking out the fun and wondrous works of Carter, Sabuda or Reinhart, along with any customer suggestions from there. If you already know their stuff and are looking for smaller, quirkier books, maybe Bantok or Pelham would be a better fit.

David A. Carter: One Red Dot: A Pop-Up Book for Children of All Ages (Classic Collectible Pop-Up)
Richard Sabuda: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: A Pop-up Adaptation
Matthew Reinhart: The Pop-Up Book of Phobias

Nick Bantock: Solomon Grundy: A Pop-Up Rhyme
David Pelham: Trail: Paper Poetry Pop-Up
