5.0 out of 5 stars Nice, fun book by the author of the Maisy books, January 26, 2006
This review is from: Hooray for Fish! (Hardcover)
This is a big, fun book with bold, colorful artwork, typical of the clean, direct style that guides Cousins' wildly successful "Maisy" series. A cute little fish, named "Little Fish," gives us a tour of the undersea world, introducing us to a bunch of fancifully named friends ("ele-fish," "eye fish," "sky fish," etc.) This has a very Dr. Seuss-y feel to it... It's visually arresting, rhymes well and fun to read aloud. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars This one's a winner!, June 14, 2006
This review is from: Hooray for Fish! (Hardcover)
Our 16-month-old son absolutely adores this book! We read it using silly voices for each fish, and he just smiles all the way through. When he wants to read this book, he'll bring it to my husband or me, making kissing noises. It's a shame that this book isn't available in a board book format--we've had to tape and re-tape several of the pages from all of the use it gets!

I went to a workshop at the local library on early literacy. This was one of the books the librarian recommended I try. This is the first book my son would sit through at 5 months. I tried other books every day, but could only get through a couple pages. We'd alway end up right back at Hooray for Fish.

Positives of this book:
- Bold colors and stark contrasts
- Simple pictures
- Great rhythmic text. "Upside down and round and round" "so many friends, so many fish. Splash, splosh, splish"
- There are a couple pages that could be search and find pages. "Can you find a fish that looks like a pineapple?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Colorful, Silly Fish Illustrations Grab Baby's Attention!, August 26, 2006
This review is from: Hooray for Fish! (Hardcover)
My 19-month old is WILD for this book; it's the reigning favorite at the moment. The silly fish pictures are great and she loves the pages where there are LOTS of fish on the page (including the inside back pages), pointing out to me her favorites from the story. She also has fun picking out the "extra" fish that look like strawberry fish, pineapple fish, etc. The sing-songy rhymes are as fun as the artwork and a definite winner in our house!

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely look at the sea, March 25, 2006

This review is from: Hooray for Fish! (Hardcover)
It seems that early childhood classrooms find themselves transformed into oceans or fish tanks at least once a year, since there is undeniable pleasure in illustrating the movement and coloration of swimmy beings, and a whole lotta books about ocean life for inspiration. Nonetheless, Lucy Cousins offers a bold, fresh title to children and teachers in Hooray for Fish! with illustrations that capture the wonderful differentness of fish and descriptive language that begs to be repeated and replicated in the classroom and at home.

The length and language are well suited for 3-4 year old whole group interest level, and will allow a lot of repeat reads to search for details in the text and illustrations. Teachers can rely on this book to generate lots of ideas for language activities and art projects, while they might look to Fish Eyes by Lois Ehlert to incorporate math ideas. The hardcover is oversized, great for reading aloud or filling up a lap or two in the classroom library.

One glance at the cover brings me joy, so I hope Cousins is hard at work on another winner for the preschool audience.

Story is a bit simple, I was hoping for a bit more of a plot, but 7 month old likes the bright fish pictures. Not sure this will an older baby entertained for long.
