Author and illustrator Wendy Watson celebrates Independence Day in America with this cheerful book for preschoolers and early readers. Tracking a family through their summer holiday, Watson begins, "Crack! Pop! Snap! Wake up, everybody--today is the Fourth of July. It's America's birthday!" The next pages proclaim, "Everything is red, white, and blue, even breakfast," and the lively illustration's accompanying verse reads, "Strawberry, blueberry, cream of tartum, tell me the initials of your sweetheartum!" Young children will enjoy the silly, often quirky traditional poems and songs, as well as the colorful, cartoonish depictions of a small-town family's Fourth of July romp.

PreSchool-K-- A small town celebrates America's birthday . and the family featured in Thanksgiving at Our House (1991) and A Valentine for You (1991, both Clarion) joins in the fun. Everything is red, white, and blue in a subdued, pastel sort of way. Snippets of patriotic songs, childhood rhymes , and chants are boxed and set off from the illustrations. Fried chicken, potato salad, and fireworks are all part of the pleasant, rural festivities. Wendy is a third-generation author and artist. She has written and illustrated twenty-one children's books, and illustrated more than sixty children's books for other authors. Her books have received many awards and honors, including: The National Book Award, Nominee; The Koret Jewish Book Award; The Sydney Taylor Honor Book Award; Best Books of the Year, The New York Times; Best Books of the Year, American Library Association; Best Books of the Year, School Library Journal; Best Books of the Year, Publisher's Weekly; and Kirkus Reviews Editor's Choice.
Wendy's artwork has been exhibited widely in national and international shows. She was one of 106 artists represented in the exhibition and book "Myth, Magic, and Mystery: One Hundred Years of American Children's Book Illustration."
