Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It’s springtime, and young squirrels Mick, Mack, and Molly are exploring treetops around their tree-trunk home. As they climb excitedly through the branches, they discover a caterpillar eating leaves, bees “sucking the nectar from the blossoms,” and then a hungry baby bird—but what does it want to eat? Not the pinecones or cherry blossoms that the squirrel trio kindly offers. Then mama bird returns with a worm, and the squirrels watch in amazement as the baby bird opens wide. Back home, the squirrels retell the story to Mama and Papa during their own mealtime. The charming color illustrations, filled with cute, cartoonish animal characters, convey the wonder and beauty of spring. Children will enjoy the entertaining details in the intricately rendered pictures, from the squirrel family’s clothing to their walnut-shell dishes, and the lively dialogue among the characters will make this an upbeat story hour choice. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Shelle Rosenfeld

Hooray for Spring! is a heartwarming children's picturebook about a family of anthropomorphic squirrels witnessing the marvels of spring. Then they come across a hungry young baby bird. Caterpillars eat leaves and bees like the nectar from blossoms, but what is a baby bird to eat? It doesn't care for pine cones, raspberries, or mushrooms... suddenly the bird's mother comes with a big, juicy worm and the children learn firsthand what baby birds really eat! The soft, gentle color illustrations add the perfect touch to this delightful story, ideal for reading aloud to young children.

Format: Hardcover
This is a lovely book for young children. Lovingly and artistically illustrated, the depictions of cherry blossoms, leaves, bugs and animals are charming. The young squirrel siblings are exploring and find a baby bird who seems hungry. They try to feed it, but it doesn't want pinecones or cherry blossoms. The squirrels are amazed when the bird's mother brings it a big worm, which it eats happily! This book is cute and funny, and also introduces the idea that different creatures like to eat different things.
