Book Description

April 7, 2009

Loaded with labor and time-saving conveniences, the Hoosier cabinet was among the earliest design innovations of the modern American kitchen. This culinary workstation allowed owners to maintain an efficient and clutter-free kitchen by centralizing utensils, cookware, tools, and ingredients all the while providing a space in which to prepare the meals of the day. Bloomington-based cabinetmaker Nancy R. Hiller draws on her years of specialty cabinet making and thorough knowledge of interior design to deliver an entertaining, beautiful, and informative history of the Hoosier cabinet—revealing its influence on the development of the contemporary American home. Illustrated with original manufacturers' advertisements and sales literature—some of which is previously unpublished—as well as color and black-and-white photos, this long-overdue book on an icon of the early 20th-century kitchen will be an invaluable resource to cabinetmakers, antiques enthusiasts, and homeowners planning a period-inspired kitchen.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In a very real sense, the Hoosier cabinet was a key element in the transformation of the American kitchen from the little-seen, out-of-the-way domain of servants to the focus of all family activity. This book should appeal to the American imagination." —Mary Ellen Polson, senior editor of Old House Interiors magazine

"Old house owners and restorers, interior designers, architects, contractors, historic preservationists, kitchen designers, and antique collectors would love a book like this." —Jane Powell, author of Bungalow Kitchens

(Jane Powell, author of Bungalow Kitchens 2009)

"Nancy Hiller has produced a book that is as much a small gem of American social and cultural history as it is the history of a product or (less so) of a company." —John Luke, American Bungalow

"... a fascinating read about the social structure of the early kitchen and its women.... Very recommended." —Jerry Sampson, Antiques Reference Books Reviews

"Pick it up, start reading and you won't want to put it down. Crazy as it sounds, a story about kitchens is full of wonderment, excitement, and down-home wisdom. The history part is equally engrossing..." —Nuvo

"Hiller's authoritative narrative will provide welcome background and detail for historians—amatuer and professional—but the illustrations—old and new—are just as likely to appeal to a contemporary generation of cabinetmakers, drawn to the functional beauty of this antique concept." —Bloomsbury Review

More About the Author

One of the last babies born in Miami Beach's Deco-era hospital before its demolition circa 1960. I have always been a fan of old--old buildings, old people, old languages, old books. I studied Latin and classical Greek at Queen's College in London then began pursuing a degree in Hebrew and Aramaic at Cambridge, where I was relieved to find myself in one of the oldest dormitories at Newnham College--unlike my best friend, who picked the figurative straw for a tiny room in an ugly new wing (and yes, it really was ugly). A pathologically serious student, I felt completely out of place amid the elite party school culture that characterized undergraduate life at Cambridge in the late '70s--not to mention clueless as to what I would do with such a degree, since I didn't want to teach. So I dropped out.

Soon after, I enrolled in a furniture making class with 15 or so teenage boys at the Isle of Ely College in Wisbech, near my home. After earning a City & Guilds of London Certificate in 1980, I got a dog and went to work for Roy Griffiths. I later worked for Millside Cabinet Makers of Royston and in the carpentry shop of the Imperial War Museum at Duxford Airbase before moving back to the States in 1987.

A few years later I returned to the classroom at Indiana University and graduated with a master's in religious studies, specializing in ethics.

Since 1995 I have operated NR Hiller Design, Inc., a custom furniture and cabinetmaking business specializing in period-authentic work for homes, businesses, and institutional buildings from the late-nineteenth through mid-twentieth centuries. My writing, furniture, and cabinetry have been published in Fine Woodworking, Old-House Interiors, American Bungalow, and other periodicals. Did you ever wonder how your kitchen became what it is today? No matter what style or period it is, this book will help you to understand your kitchen better. It may leave you delighted with what you have or imagining how it could be improved. It may also leave you thrilled with the character of an old kitchen and willing to put up with its impracticality in order to maintain the integrity of your house. Everybody has a relationship of one sort or another with a kitchen. For most of us, it's intimate and occurs multiple times on a daily basis. In this book, Nancy Hiller will introduce you to your kitchen's past and its development with well-written, intelligent prose and excellent illustrations. This is a book to read, to share and to keep.

This review is from: The Hoosier Cabinet in Kitchen History (Hardcover)
A well written, accurate and beautifully illustrated book. I purchased The Hoosier Cabinet in Kitchen History by Nancy Hiller as a gift for my wife. Not only did the item arrive on time, but she has not laid it down since its arrival.

A `Must read' for all those folks who have a Hoosier, or who enjoy reading about family kitchens of the past!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just couldn't enjoy this writer., February 8, 2011

I ordered this book in hopes of acquiring more information on Seller's Hoosier cabinets. While this book is informative I just couldn't get into Ms. Hiller's style of writing. I finally just looked up the pages that referred to the Seller's cabinet and read those and looked at the photos. It does offer lots of insight into the lives of families at the time of the Hoosier heyday, it was not what I was looking for as far as brand information. It is a nicely presented hardback book but with few color photos.
