I first saw Hoots and Hellmouth at the XPN Festival in Philly in 2006, they played an amazing set right before the massive thunderstorms rolled in. I was so blown away I had to get my hands on some of their music, problem was that they had no albums released. Well I waited a whole year to get my hands on this album. Expectations were high and in the end I felt a little disappointed first listen through, mainly that the production is too clean for this style of music. The better tracks are the ones that sound as if they were recorded live-you can feel the passion on such tracks as Home in a Boxcar, Home for supper and This hand is a mighty hand. I wish this flowed throughout the album. However second time through I can honestly say each song grew on me and had me tappinn along. An early favorite is the closer West of Where the Sun goes down. I highly recommend this album if you like the roots rock of Avett Brothers, folkism of Josh Ritter or you just want to hear some good tunes. However I also suggest you catch these guys live-hell of a show...I just hope they put out a live album sooner then later so those unable to make a show can get on board.

This album is a solid roots rock effort. It has been a total hit with people riding along in my Jeep; one friend even borrowed it so as to make an illegal copy. For my part, I can't stop listening to it. I want to buy another copy, just so I can have the pleasure of opening a fresh copy again.

If you like rock music, you'll enjoy it. If you like acoustic music, you'll enjoy it. There is lots of energy here, infectious melodies, and mandolins. What more could you possibly want?

Buy this.

I saw Hoots and Hellmouth for the first time last weekend and I was absolutely blown away. If they are ever in your city I suggest you take off work, find a sitter for the kids, skip school, Hell! Quit your job! Just drop whatever you're doing and be there. Trust me, it'll be worth it. From about, oh...I'd say a quarter through the first song I had already made up my mind that I liked these guys...by the end of the show I was in love with these guys and I made sure everyone including the guys in the band knew exactly how much I enjoyed it. I bought this CD after the 2nd or 3rd song they played, I put it in my CD player when I got home and I still haven't taken it out yet! I love this album, I love this band!

I'm no music critic, but this band is awesome!!! They are from Philadelphia. We went to see the band live last year at a little place in WV even though we knew nothing about them. Music and band were a blast! We all gravitated to it instantly, even my 7 & 10 year olds. They are an amazing mix of rock, gospel, folk, & bluegrass. They put their all into the music. They really let their passion for music and community spirit shine through - a rare & special thing in this day & age. Just wonderful for all!!! You have to listen to them, read their web site, see them live. You'll be "hootin'" for more in no time!

I saw Hoots and Hellmouth perform at The Boot (no longer in business) in Norfolk, VA 5 years ago. I was dragged out by a friend.
Their energy and catchy sound made me an instant fan. I had so much fun that night, and I don't really like live music.
I don't even write that many reviews. But 5 years later, I still LOVE this album. I live in NYC now, and it just feels great hearing these sounds. I sure hope I catch them up here some day.

BUY IT!
