We went through our second Dyson, and decided to switch just for the sake of doing so. Aside from the really high end European models, we opted for this new "prestige" line from Hoover, figuring it would be interesting to see what's the best they can do at a higher price point.

The machine itself looks really good, and when you turn it on, it's like starting a nice car, it almost purrs. The electronic start/stop and the electronic height adjustments are fabulous, very refined. And the machine seems to pick up everything in site.

Now, here are a few things to keep in mind, none of which are deal-breakers, but believe me, this thing is not perfect.

First and foremost, emptying the dirt chamber. At first we thought it was like most other bagless machines, you flick a lever and let the stuff fall in your garbage. But after about a week, we noticed the machine not picking up nearly as well, and we couldn't figure out a thing.

Then we looked carefully and saw that a huge collection of hair and debris had collected inside an inner cup, wrapped around the so-called cyclonic device. Once we got rid of that stuff, the vacuum was like new again. Still, it is hardly referred to in the manual, and it is rather a messy task.

Finally is the "dirt" indicator. It works on some sort of audio principle, sending out sounds which come back distored if they run in to dirt. I find that this works most of the time, but sometimes, it just stays red, and even after going over the area five times, it stays red.

I guess one could beef about the extension cord, why they didn't come up with some better way to unreel it and attach it to the machine. This is just like every other vacuum in that respect, but the cord seems longer.

I think I would buy it again, but the bag emptying procedure is sloppy and very unsophisticated. I'd be looking for machines that might do that job better.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is One Outstanding Vacuum, March 16, 2009
This review is from: Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015 (Kitchen)
I recently had to pick up a new vacuum when my old vacuum (an upright that wasn't supposed to lose suction, but which broke down and stopped sucking altogether. At least stopped sucking dirt from the floor, that is) went kaput, and I did some research, trying to find one that was sturdy, had the extra tools, and really picked up dirt. I have two large-ish (50 - 70 pound) dogs that shed a bit, track in some dirt, and can cause carpet chaos, so I really wanted to bring home a powerhouse this time. I liked the early reviews I'd seen on this new Hoover Platinum, and liked how it combined cyclonic action (which I thought was one of those marketing terms, but which actually makes some cleaning sense) and Hoover's own Windtunnel mechanisms (my mom swears by her Hoover she's had forever with this, and hey, you have to be able to trust your mom, right), and so decided it was the vacuum for me. And, I'm darn happy so far that I did. It just picks up more dirt and dog hair from the carpet and upholstery than any vacuum I've had so far, and is great for cleaning all of a big house. Sometimes you just want to spot clean, but if you really want to get at cleaning, and really want cleaning power, this is the vacuum for those jobs. All the tools are a plus, too (especially the long hose and the crevice tool, which are perfect for stairs. Oh, the dusting brush is oddly handy, too. I've never really had one of those that worked that well, but this one's tops. Maybe it's just that the engine and all deliver enough power to make the dusting brush worthwhile, but I use it all the time), and it looks great, and the 6-year warranty is nice, but really, without the suction and dirt-pulling ability, would anything else matter? Nope, which is why I'm glad I made the right choice and went for this new Platinum vaccum, because it really picks up the dirt.

Now for the bad. Size!!!!!! Too big, will not fit under our beds like all our other models that we have owned, even when you put it at the lowest setting it still will not fit. The extension is NOT long enough to do any vacuuming above shoulder height.
Would love to give it a 5 star ratings, but the two items that I mentioned are too important not to mark it down a star for each one. Would I buy it again? No, for the two reasons I mentioned, but Man the areas it does reach... Wow, what suction!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good But with issues, May 11, 2009

This review is from: Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015 (Kitchen)
I just purchased this vacuum so this is from the perspective of the first 48 hours. I read quite a bit about different versions looking for a HEPA filter bagless model. In the end, the choice was between this unit and a DYSON 14. The DYSON had many more positive reviews and, to me, was considered the standard. However, I do not plan to use the vacumm often so I let my wife may the final decision. She handled both vacuums and selected this unit. As I understand it, she selected this one because of the conventional look as well as the perception that the Hoover will go under some furniture and will clean baseboards. The DYSON will not.

A small glitch occurred when we got the unit home. There are only two screws to finish the vacuum and Hoover forgot to include them. So, I had to drive a 1hr round trip to obtain the screws. Thanks Hoover.

Back home, the vacuum went together and we tested it in areas where we typically vacuum with our old sears craftsman model. In all areas, lots of dirt and carpet lint were recovered. Inspecting the debris both then and after another repeat indicates that most of what is picked up is carpet lint. The beater brushes appear to work carpet hard.

The dirty/clean indicator is sonic based. From what I see, if anything is 'seen' in the airstream, the light is red. This means that carpet lint triggers the dirty indication as well. This seems to work but repeats over the same patch of "clean" carpet will likely have reoccurrences of "dirty". I think we are going to think in terms of average rather than looking too closely at the light.

What I notice is that the extension wand is short as in very short. The DYSON, though difficult to get on and off, was better in this regard. One good thing about the vacuum is that the brushes turn off when the vacuum is on and upright. This is something that the craftsman didn't do.

I gave this unit 4 stars for the completely useless canister bottom lid clip. The canister comes off perfectly. It dumps easily but not as easliy as the DYSON. Closing the bottom cover is a pain. The manual says "press firmly". Yeah, a gorilla could press firmly but everyone else is going to try banging or slamming the lid close. This is not good long-term. I eventually showed my wife that by pressing the release button again, you can actually close the bottom without risking damage to the unit or your hand. Unfortunately, this will get both hands completely dusty. This is a complete failure by Hoover. If anyone can simply press down and get this to close I would like to know how. I have to wonder if the engineer even tried this contraption.

One last item is noise. This unit is quiet. It is quieter than the DYSON or our old craftsman. Both my wife and I commented on this.

In the end, this vacuum appears better than older models. It appears to be sturdier than the DYSON. This unit has three filters all of which are permanent (cyclone, primary, hepa). This is what I was looking for and expect it not to disappoint.

Here's to hope.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Single Penny!, April 19, 2009

This review is from: Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015 (Kitchen)
This vacuum cleaner was worth every penny I paid for it! I was very hesitant to pay about $450 for a vacuum, but I was tired of buying a new vacuum about every 2 years because I did not want to pay more than $100 for a vacuum cleaner.

I was not disappointed. I have a dog that sheds, and I have longer hair, and I shed a lot too, and find that this vacuum picks up very well. I could not believe how clean my rugs looked after using this vacuum on them; I did not realize just how dirty they were.

Also, the controls are very intuitive, and the vacuum was very easy to assemble.

I agree with the one user who mentioned the awkward way of emptying the vacuum when it's full, but it is by no means a deal breaker.

Between the performance and the 6 year limited warranty, I highly recommend this product. I wanted to give it 4.5 stars because the awkward way of emptying the vacuum, but since I could not, I rounded up because I really like this vacuum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought this Hoover, May 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015 (Kitchen)
I have used this vacuum for about a year and I am quite happy with it. I suffer from allergies and researched for a vacuum that would do a great job without a +$500 tag. If you're in a similar position, see the PROs/CONs of my experience so far, and exaggerated information (IMO) out there:

PROs
1. Filtration system, including reusable HEPA filter: This vacuum traps everything, including allergens like dust mites (according to manufacturer's claims). But I did notice a significant improvement with my allergies after I started using this vacuum. The washable HEPA filter gives me control over the vacuum's performance by allowing me to clean it and without the need for replacement filters every couple months.

2. Suction system: This is my first Hoover, and I was so impressed with the suction system. It picked up dust left behind my old vacuum, and even the dust found under the carpet.

3. Relatively quiet motor considering all that is going on.

CONs: The 2 issues below are the reason I took away a start from this item, and only gave it 4 out of 5.

1. It is difficult to use the accessories hose because it is kind of short. It is difficult to vacuum hard to reach places because the hose does not extend too much.

2. Limited reach under furniture: Vacuum canister can get a bit on the way when trying to reach under furniture.

EXAGGERATED INFO (IMO): While reading reviews, I came across some users' feedback that made me think twice about whether this item was right for me. However, I found some of that feedback to be a bit exaggerated. And that is:

1. Emptying Canister: I kept coming across complaints on emptying the canister. It is not a big deal. I just place the canister inside a bag, press the button to release it open, and use my hand (through exterior) to close it. Yes, it would be nice to click the button again to close, but it is not that difficult.

2. Dealing with dust while Emptying Canister: Honestly, this will happen with any bagless vacuum. And lint/"stuff" can get stuck can get stuck in tubes, but it is nothing that takes more than 30 seconds to clean.

3. Too Heavy to Move: It is a big vacuum, somewhat bulky, but it is not too heavy given its size. Perhaps people are not using the right carpet height setting while vacuuming, causing the machine to get stuck on the carpet.

Overall, I would purchase this item all over again, and would recommend it to others. Hope you find this info to be useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I Had Bought This Sooner, September 8, 2009

This review is from: Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015 (Kitchen)
After several years with an older Hoover, we finally got tired of its performance and began seeking a replacement. After doing a lot of research on this, Comsumer Digest's, and Best Buy's sites, we went with this one. Assembly was quite simple, requiring only a Phillips head screwdriver for two screws, before it was set up. Our first use, just after vacuuming an area done with the old vacuum, left me stunned. The clear reservoir/ "bag?" area filled with lint, dirt, dust, hair and fibers, and left me uneasy about leaving any other carpets un-done. Part of this vacuum's appeal comes in the form of the sensor that lights up as "dirty" or "clean" as it detects the amount of material being sucked up. It never seems to be wrong, taking me into the more heavily-trafficked areas and requiring a little extra time to get it all sucked up just right.

While some have complained about the length of the attachment hose, it does stretch pretty well, which allows me to hit everywhere I need in my one-floor home. The bright LED light in the front illuminates the carpet much better than our old vacuum, insuring that tiny Lego parts are saved and crying children are therefore avoided. The hose "attachment" has a much sturdier construction than our older vacuum, and will seemingly take a lot more abuse before it should have any problems. Two additional hose attachemtns are provided, a crevice tool and a wider head, which should help most tackle their needs.

Overall, the story on this vacuum is that it is well worth the price, and will leave you appalled at what you used to accept as a standard of cleanliness. My wife has commented that the air in the house seems cleaner/ clearer, and I definitely notice an improvement in the feel of our carpets walking around in bare feet. I wish we had gotten this years ago, and am thrilled with the results thus far.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I hoped, but ok., November 11, 2009
This review is from: Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015 (Kitchen)
Pros:

Has a 6-year warrantee. This is lucky because the first one I had, after using about a month of use, started spontaneously turning itself off after running for a few seconds. Hoover replaced it for free.

Good suction.

Cons:

The hose is much too short and it has only one extension wand.

Pet owners should know it clogs very easily, and you have to empty it after nearly every use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Vacuum I've Ever Owned!, February 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015 (Kitchen)
I researched vacuum cleaners for a month and everything that I was looking for lead me to the Hoover. My comparisons were Dyson and Meile, which are way out of my price range! I have a two bedroom apartment (approx 1200 sq ft) two kids and a small dog. I buy a vacuum about every six months. I wanted something that was going to last and keep working!!! I think I'm going to be very happy with this vacuum. Price was right on Amazon ($250ish). Assembly was very easy. Two screws to attach the handle to the unit and I was ready to go! The suction is amazing!!! I wanted to address some of the complaints that I've seen on many boards.... The dirt cup IS hard to close. But just hold down the button you pressed to open it and it will catch the latch. Stop trying to slam it shut!! I was able to figure it out and my hands did not get dirty!! The only time my hands did get dirty was emptying the cyclonic cone. No big deal. I expect that when I have a bagless unit. I'm not sure how sophisticated dumping dirt can be...realistic expectations people!!! I suspect that regular vacuuming with this unit will cut down on the number of times I have to empty it...as its first use was excessive because it was picking up after a far inferior vacuum. I also read about the hose being too short. Again, realistic expectations...I gave it a good stretch before using it and I was able to reach the ceiling....what more do you want? I see they sell an attachment.... And for this thing not being self propelled (and I will admit, I've never owned one) it sure did jump right into action when I turned it on! I saw some complaints that it was hard to push. Adjust the floor setting to a higher level. Problem solved. A six year warrantee is nice too...that says to me that they stand behind the workmanship and don't expect anything to break...and if it does they will fix it! SIX YEARS!! After buying a new vacuum every six months...that sounds pretty sweet!! I'm very happy with my purchase!! Thank you Hoover!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Vacuum, September 24, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015 (Kitchen)
I have had a rocky relationship with Hoover vacuums. I have to say, if Costco didn't have the greatest return policy, I don't think I could have given Hoover another chance. I gave this vacuum a chance, and I am glad I did. This vacuum sucked so much dirt and debris out of our carpets, I could not believe it. I heard all of the rave reviews of Dyson and almost went with one, but then my next door neighbor's Dyson got clogged and they spent hours trying to fix it. I didn't feel like bothering with all of the hassle, so I looked towards this vacuum. It really does an amazing job sucking everything out of the carpets. The height adjustments are on the handle, and that makes switching between carpets, hardwood floors, and rugs a breeze; no more bending over and fighting the switch to cooperate on the base of the vacuum. The DirtFinder may seem like a gimmick, but it really is useful. The one thing that I can see being a problem for some people, is that the wand is not telescoping, neither does the vacuum have extension wands. It is just the one foot long aluminum wand, plus the fairly long hose. Since the aluminum wand can be easily removed with the press of a button, Hoover could sell a separate telescoping wand separately, maybe that is their plan; but that is the only thing I can find that I am not pleased about. Other than that, this is a terrific vacuum, that will help make our home a cleaner one. You cannot go wrong with this vacuum.
