5.0 out of 5 stars they are pricey, but probably worth it
The hubby and I live in an old dusty house. The house originally had a coal-fired hot-water boiler and I swear some of that old black dust is still lingering in dark and hidden places. Plus, the house has radiator heat and no central air, so the dust never gets captured by a filter, as it would with a forced-air system.

UNITED VACUUMS did NOT send the "3M FILTRETE" HEPA BAGS that I ordered.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quality Control Is Out Of Control, November 30, 2009

I received these bags today November 30, 2009. I had ordered these before with no problems but, that was from a different vendor at a slightly higher price. This time, the vendor I purchased these from was AceHardwareOutlet. I thought, I know that company name. Well, you guessed it. When I opened the box, the "chemical" smell that other reviewers stated was pretty bad, kind of like lighter fluid. I opened one of the packages to see if the actual vacuum bag itself smelled, and unfortunately it did.

The picture of the 3M bag with Filtrete is not the one I received either. This did not surprise me because the ones I ordered before did not match the picture. I telephoned the Hoover Company and did some detective work. The vacuum bags (from China or Mexico in the black and white package) that are being shipped are, in fact, "Genuine" Hoover products. They are HEPA and have (3) three layers of filtration and have the same specs as the 3M brand. I was told that 3M (under agreement with the Hoover Company) was manufacturing their own vacuum bags for Hoover vacuums and promoting their "Filtrete" technology on the label. Then companies like Maytag, Sears, etc. would (aftermarket) sell these to their customers.

When I placed my first order, I still had some actual 3M Filtrete bags to compare to the Hoover bags. The only difference is that the Hoover bags are quite a bit "thicker" fabric. Although this would suggest stronger or more durable, I never had the 3M bags rip or tear on me.

I called AceHardwareOutlet customer service; I was on hold for 25 minutes. A representative who could barely speak English told me to place the bags in the sunshine for a few days to air them out. In disbelief of that suggestion I laughed and said, "I don't think so."

As of now, I am waiting for a replacement shipment from AceHardwareOutlet. I'll follow-up once the new bags arrive. If it wasn't for the "chemical" smell I would be happy with my purchase and give a (5) five star rating but, (1) One star for bad quality control and misleading (fraudulent) pictures.

1.0 out of 5 stars These are not Filtrete Bags as Pictured and Descibed, September 4, 2009

United Vacuum (aka ezvacuum.com) is knowingly substituting a non-Filtrete branded bag, not as pictured and described. Why does Amazon allow fraud to continue on their site? These bags also have a strong turpentine-like odor. Not pleasant. Beware.

I did not receive the 3M filtrete hepa bags as advertised. What I received was a knock-off from china that had the worst chemical smell when the bag containing the filters was opened. The packaging looks nothing like the picture and does not say 3M on it. These bags are not the same as the 3M product. I would never purchase again from this seller."

5.0 out of 5 stars they are pricey, but probably worth it, September 9, 2007
The hubby and I live in an old dusty house. The house originally had a coal-fired hot-water boiler and I swear some of that old black dust is still lingering in dark and hidden places. Plus, the house has radiator heat and no central air, so the dust never gets captured by a filter, as it would with a forced-air system.

That's why I spend the extra money for the Filtrete Hepa bags. I just ordered two more and paid $6 for the bag and $7 for shipping (ouch), but the good news is, the manufacturer promises that these bags really do capture the wee tiny particulate matter.

Filtrete is a 3M trademark and according to Hoover's website, these Filtrete bags have three layers of filtering media and an electrostatically charged liner in the bag. It filters down to .3 microns. By comparison, a high-falutin' top-of-the-line electrostatic whole-house air filter will capture particulate matter down to .3 microns.

Plus, these cloth bags are easier to install than those troublesome paper bags and my initial observation is that the Filtrete holds a little more than its paper cousin.

Back in the day, I owned an old Hoover upright and when you turned that puppy on, a cloud of egg mites, dead skin, dander and bacteria (otherwise known and described as dust) would be launched into the air. Standing in a sunbeam, you could actually *see* the dust cloud poof out of the vacuum bag. That vacuum did little more than reposition the dirt.

Conversely, my new Hoover with a Filtrete bag installed actually captures the dust and enables one to keep their home a LOT cleaner. Despite its higher cost, I think these Hepa Filtrete bags are a very wise investment for those of us in dusty old houses.

These are made in China and reek! Don't get them. You are better off to buy Hoover bags in person so that you can see that they are not made in China.

As others have stated the bag I received was not the item pictured. I did receive a Hoover branded bag in the correct size. But as others noted it smells like a chemical factory and I have not even opened the package yet. The bag I received was made in Chine and the pictured 3M bags are made in Mexico.

I wonder if the 3M bags are still available. The bags I did receive match the image on Hoovers website for the Type Y bags and they do not have the 3M bag listed.
