Hoover delivers a "Dyson" for less than half the price.,
By
This review is from: NEW Hoover Mach 5 Cyclonic Bagless Upright
After years of lugging the old Kirby around I was ready for a change! Featuring the cyclonic multi-chambered vacuum style made popular by Dyson and three stage filtration including the all important HEPA, Hoover has produced a winner with the Mach5.
The onboard hose, wands and attachments (including a powered hand tool) are much easier to figure out than the Dyson I used for several months. The powered hand tool worked really well removing pet hair from the upholstery and carpeting in my car and the hose sucked up everything from pencils to socks when I ventured under the furniture in our teenager's bedroom. The Telescoping handle was a plus as was the carpet height adjustment dial, which Dyson excludes in favor of what is supposedly a self adjusting feature which I found annoying as I often will go over the carpet's surface to remove pet hair then reset the vacuum to deep clean. Pet hair was no problem for the Hoover and I found it picked up more heavy dirt than the Dyson as well. The Hoover also never "screamed" at me as the Dyson had when it came to loose threads or carpet edges. I believe the Dyson has some sort of belt "clutch" that is intended to stop the roller brush if you catch a carpet thread or fringe, but the "scream" the Dyson makes left me dreading getting near area rugs or the older loop pile of the family room! The Hoover design also made carrying the cleaner a breeze. Add to that the 28' power cord with it's push button rewind, easy one touch step switch for going from carpets to hardwoods and easy to access filters made me ever so happy to have purchased the Hoover. The only complaint I have is the machine feels a little top heavy, but removing the powered hand tool attachment from it's storage spot in the machine helped somewhat.

Good cleaning, but a hassle,
By Mrs. Robert "stepmom79" (Huntsville, AL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NEW Hoover Mach 5 Cyclonic Bagless Upright
I've had the Mach 5 for about 2 years now, and I will say it does a very nice job of picking up dirt - better than any other upright I've owned. It's a little heavier than what I would like, but that's not my main concern. The pet hair attachment is pretty decent, even though it loses brush rotation easily. I love the retractable cord, and the hose length. What I do not like about the Mach 5 is the torture I sustain every time I empty the cup. It seems easy enough; remove the canister, open the trap & empty the contents. However, the trap door doesn't open easily. I usually have to pry it open with a finger after unlatching it. And this always causes whatever falls out to end up on my hands/sleeves. The "loose dirt" will usually fall out of the canister pretty easily, but not the collected dust, hair, etc. This all remains bonded together in the canister. I can shake & tap all I want.. this stuff will not come out on its own. It must be removed by hand, which means I have to squeeze my forearm as far as I can into the canister & pull out the clumps of mess with my fingers. This act itself creates another mess to vaccum (not to mention a bath for me), so I prefer to perform it outside to save myself the trouble - which is not my idea of convenience. There is the option of removing the top of the canister, but it's not any better. Still have to use my hands to free the clumps, all the while dust & dirt particles are flying everywhere.
Overall, I'll say that I look forward to an enhanced version of this unit.. hopefully in time the quality of the cleaner will be combined with cleaner disposal. (Edit - January 11, 2010): Time for a new cleaner. It still runs, but the carpet sweeper makes a horrific noise & vibrates a lot. Does not clean carpets well anymore. Belts have been replaced.. and nothing appears to be broken; we suspect maybe it's just general wear. I don't plan on buying another one of these.

Mach 5 - Great vacuum, great price!,
This review is from: NEW Hoover Mach 5 Cyclonic Bagless Upright
In response to another reviewers complaint, visit www.vacuumpartstore.com for parts: V Belt Item #HO-38528034, 4.99 Roller Brush Item #HO-93002361, 24.99. I have owned this vacuum for 8-10 months (early in 2008), purchased from Walmart. I did a lot of research before purchasing it and found some reviews the compare this to the Dyson. I don't know if that is true but I love the vacuum. It is a bit heavy, if that's a concern. The onboard tools are a great feature and I love the Pet Tool, as we have 4 cats and a dog and I have long hair. The canister is a good size, though fills up quickly with all of our hair - be careful not to get too full or that's a bit messy, as with any bagless I'm sure. I love the retractable cord, the stretchy hose (though a bit stiff at first) and the suction is great! We have very short carpet, a thick rug, berber & linoleum and it works well on all heights and flooring types. With every use, it makes the carpet look brand new! On linoleum it does a great job and keeps the dust in - some "value models" seem to make a big dust cloud instead of sucking it in... not the case here! Overall I can't say that I have any complaints and I would highly recommend this as an alternative to a much higher priced machine.
